Treasury Launches Quantum Task Force as Financial Risks Mount
The world of financial technology has seen a great deal of discussion aimed at preparing the market for super quantum computers and theoretical attacks. Bitcoin and digital assets have been involved in the conversation for quite some time, and the Treasury’s new task force will not only look at traditional finance (TradFi), but also “Digital Assets and Emerging Technology Risk.”
The Treasury Department explicitly mentions President Trump’s Executive Order (EO) 14412, and the press release claims that the new task force is dedicated to supporting the EO, which enacts policy to “strengthen cryptographic protections for America’s sensitive data, critical infrastructure, and digital economy.” The federal agency said that the taskforce will work with a slew of officials, TradFi institutions, public and private sector leaders, and tech providers.
“America must lead in securing the technologies that power our economy,” Treasury Secretary Bessent explained in the release. “This Task Force will help ensure our financial system remains strong, secure, and competitive as new technologies reshape the global landscape.”
Moody’s Agrees Quantum Readiness Must Take Center Stage
In a note shared with Bitcoin.com News, Cristiano Ventricelli, the Vice President, Digital Economy Group, Moody’s Ratings, insisted that the U.S. needs to prepare the financial system for the future of quantum computing.
“The Quantum-Readiness Task Force adds a security dimension to the U.S. policy agenda for digital assets, which includes initiatives by the White House, SEC and CFTC to support their use within regulated financial markets,” Ventricelli wrote.
The Moody’s Ratings executive added:
“Digital assets are increasingly viewed as strategically relevant to US financial innovation and competitiveness, but advances in quantum computing could eventually weaken the cryptographic protections on which they rely. A sufficiently capable quantum computer could compromise transaction authorization, asset ownership and custody arrangements, potentially undermining market confidence.”
Quantum Readiness Shifts From Future Threat to Present-Day Risk
Ventricelli’s note says that addressing the issue head-on with the task force is “relevant to the credibility of US efforts to expand digital-asset markets.” In the Treasury Department announcement, Deborah Guild, chair of the Financial Services Sector Coordinating Council and head of Technology at PNC Financial Services Group, Inc., shared the same sentiment.
Guild said that PQC readiness is no longer an exercise needed to prep for the future and insists “it is a present-day risk control.”
