Current Status: Extended Detention
The central defendant in one of the Czech Republic’s highest‑profile crypto‑laundering cases, Tomáš Jiříkovský, has for the first time indicated he may cooperate with authorities. The shift came after a custody hearing at the Brno Municipal Court, where Judge Ivana Otrubová ordered that he remain in detention as the case proceeds.
Jiříkovský—a programmer linked to darknet operations and money laundering—had consistently refused to speak with investigators. Even after securing favorable procedural rulings from the Constitutional Court regarding his detention, he refused to cooperate. However, prosecutor Lucie Šlamová reported a change in the defendant’s stance after the latest court session.
“The defendant has taken certain steps and changed his position regarding the operation of the darknet marketplace and the laundering of criminal proceeds,” Šlamová said. “He did not provide detailed testimony, but he indicated the possibility of cooperation. We will work to build on this willingness.”
The court ruled that Jiříkovský must remain in custody, citing flight‑risk concerns and the possibility that he still controls part of the illicit cryptocurrency. Prosecutors allege he operated darknet platforms and laundered large volumes of criminal proceeds.
Prosecutors are seeking up to a 20-year prison sentence alongside asset confiscation. At the heart of the scandal is a controversial $44 million bitcoin donation Jiříkovský made to the Czech Ministry of Justice. Jiříkovský offered the state 30% of a seized cryptocurrency wallet in exchange for help unlocking it.
Former Justice Minister Pavel Blažek accepted the donation, asserting at the time that the funds were legitimate. However, the transaction sparked a major political storm when investigators alleged the donation was a scheme designed to legitimize illicit proceeds from darknet operations.
The fallout led to Blažek’s resignation and triggered criminal charges against several high-ranking officials for facilitating money laundering and breaching official duties. With the investigation files spanning tens of thousands of pages, trial proceedings before Judge Otrubová are expected to be extensive as authorities attempt to untangle the full scope of the scheme.
