Why Is Institutional Digital Asset Custody Moving Beyond Safekeeping?
As per Ripple-commissioned BCG report, institutional custody is becoming an operational layer for digital finance. While cryptographic security and private-key management remain key, institutions are increasingly evaluating providers on their governance controls, interoperability across networks and integration with existing financial systems. The report points to regulatory developments including Europe’s Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation (MiCA) and the United States GENIUS Act, as part of an evolving environment for virtual assets.
As governance frameworks develop, institutions are looking beyond basic safekeeping to determine how virtual assets can be managed and used within established financial workflows. BCG also emphasizes the importance of regulation and approval controls as automated systems, including bots and AI agents, become more active. Institutions need processes that determine how assets can be accessed, moved and used, alongside the cryptographic safeguards protecting them.
Custody requirements are also diverging across institutions. Retail focused fintechs and payment companies may prefer the Wallet-as-a-service model, while large banks may license self-custody technology and build their own client-facing products. Other institutions may choose for integrated providers that blend custody with settlement assets, payment infrastructure, treasury services and execution. The report further identifies multi-custody arrangements supported by a common orchestration layer as an increasingly crucial approach. Such systems allow institutions to cooperate assets across several custodians and networks without depending on distinct integrations for every function.
How Could Custody Create New Opportunities for Banks and Digital Finance?
BCG estimates that a regional bank with a balance sheet of $200 billion to $300 billion could improve its profit and loss by up to $100 million by combining digital asset use cases with appropriate custody decisions. The report links this potential to services including tokenization, stablecoin issuance, payments, treasury operations, lending and collateral management. The estimate is a potential result described by BCG, not a guaranteed financial return for every bank. Actual results would rely on the institution’s business model, customer demand, implementation costs and choice of digital asset services.
The report also anticipates changes in the custody market, with providers potentially gaining scale by integrating multiple services, aggregating blockchain networks or offering modular infrastructure. For institutions, custody decisions could therefore influence not only operational risk but also how quickly they can release new financial products.
Ripple is positioning its own custody services within this wider market. Its infrastructure includes governance and policy controls, adaptable deployment options and connections to its wider digital asset offerings. These include $RLUSD, Ripple’s US dollar-pegged stablecoin, as well as blockchain-based payments and treasury services.
Separately, the broader institutional $XRP market provides extra context for interest in virtual assets. It notes $1.8 billion in net inflows into U.S. spot $XRP exchange traded funds and says Evernorth Holdings actively manages 473 million $XRP. These figures are distinct from the BCG custody findings and should not be interpreted as evidence that the report itself attributes those inflows or holdings to changes in custody demand.
As institutions move from holding digital assets to using them across financial operations, custody providers face growing pressure to combine security with interoperability, governance and practical integration. The BCG report’s central argument is that custody decisions can shape which digital financial services institutions are able to offer and how effectively they can bring those services to market.
