The closure removes a significant market for the token, since Bithumb is one of South Korea’s main crypto trading venues.
Background: Security Incident and Korean Regulation
The trading-caution status followed a security-related episode at the end of August.
Core first reported the problem on August 31, saying a few validators had accrued block rewards far above the amount scheduled by the protocol.
Bithumb suspended CORE deposits and withdrawals on August 31 over a suspected security issue and later designated the token for trading caution.
Core DAO said at the time that
the planned upgrade would apply prospectively, leaving the blockchain and all previously confirmed transactions unchanged.
The delisting also comes as South Korean exchanges operate under stricter oversight.
The Act on the Protection of Virtual Asset Users requires virtual asset service providers to safely manage and store their customers’ deposits and virtual assets.
The law, passed in July 2023, did not initially set clear standards for listings or delisting.
Regulators later said guidelines would cover whether to maintain listings,
providing a basis for delisting when problems arise.
Holders of CORE on Bithumb should move their tokens before the December 30 deadline. Open orders will be cancelled when trading ends on November 30.
