The catastrophic implosion of Zondacrypto, once a titan of the Eastern and Central European cryptocurrency market, has cast a dark shadow over the crypto industry.
It has also produced a bizarre true-crime saga: the disappearance of two consecutive chief executives in the span of four years, according to a report by the New York Times.
Going dark
The exchange’s website went completely dark in April. Its proprietary digital token, the ZND, has lost 99.9 percent of its value.
Sylwester Suszek, Zondacrypto’s founder, was born to a coal miner in Katowice, Poland. He then transformed himself into a flashy “crypto king.” After launching the exchange under the name BitBay in 2014, he lived large with a fleet of luxury vehicles, including Porsches and a Ferrari.
Due to local regulatory scrutiny, Suszek moved the exchange’s registration to Estonia. Around this time, his sister, Nicole Suszek, noted that he became increasingly paranoid. His fears were justified: an unidentified assailant smashed the windshield of his Ferrari with an ax, which was believed to be a former business partner with alleged mob ties.
In March 2022, Suszek vanished. His last known location was a fuel depot in Czeladz, Poland, where he met with associate Marian Wszolek.
Suszek’s sister started sending harrowing voice and text messages, in which he begged for Bitcoin to secure his release, claiming his captors were threatening to cut off his fingers over a debt. Tragically, he has not been seen since. Wszolek was later charged with kidnapping and money laundering, but he has vanished.
Another disappearance
Following Suszek’s disappearance, his trusted lawyer and deputy, Przemyslaw Kral, took the reins. They were rebranded as Zondacrypto and started a public relations blitz.
Kral invested heavily in high-profile sponsorships. Zondacrypto slapped its name on major European soccer clubs, the Polish Olympic Committee, and so on.
That said, things were not so bright behind the scenes. The company’s headquarters in Estonia was just a tiny, abandoned office. Estonian regulators ended up cracking down on the exchange.
By late 2025, customers began experiencing severe delays in withdrawing their funds. Kral initially attributed this to technical glitches. Later, he ridiculously claimed the exchange had 4,500 Bitcoins (worth roughly $330 million) safely in reserve, but Sylwester Suszek (the missing founder) was the only person who could unlock them. Then, Kral completely disappeared.
Today, Zondacrypto clients are left stranded. The entire operation is believed to be a long-running scam.
