The sharp move came after several catalysts strengthened the outlook for the company’s flagship Tanbreez rare earth project in Greenland.
BlackRock remains the largest pure institutional shareholder in Critical Metals, holding approximately 4.52 million shares. The asset manager also increased its position by more than 900,000 shares during the second quarter, signaling growing institutional exposure to the rare earth developer.
The latest rally followed news that the United States had reached a permanent security agreement with Denmark and Greenland, granting Washington expanded rights over security matters on the Arctic island.
Investors viewed the agreement as a positive development for Western-backed mining projects operating in Greenland, including Critical Metals’ Tanbreez asset, one of the world’s largest known heavy rare earth deposits.
The project is strategically important as Western governments seek to diversify critical mineral supply chains away from China.
Rare earth elements are essential components in electric vehicles, defense systems, renewable energy infrastructure, and advanced electronics, making secure supplies increasingly important for the United States and Europe.
Critical Metals fundamentals
The Greenland-related news came just days after Critical Metals announced a significant metallurgical breakthrough at Tanbreez.
The company reported achieving more than 99% dissolution of eudialyte concentrate into 19 ultra-high-purity rare earth products.
At the same time, preliminary studies for a proposed Romanian refinery projected annual revenue potential of roughly $2.2 billion before operating costs, taxes, and capital recovery.
The planned refinery would process up to 100,000 tons of concentrate annually and form part of a broader Western-aligned rare earth supply chain linking Greenland’s resources with European processing facilities.
Further supporting sentiment, Critical Metals recently advanced its proposed acquisition of European Lithium after receiving court approvals allowing shareholder votes on the transaction to proceed next month. If completed, the deal would give the company full ownership of the Tanbreez project.
The company already controls 92.5% of Tanbreez following its acquisition of an additional 50.5% stake earlier this year.
The move was likely amplified by high short interest, with positive news triggering short-covering and adding buying pressure.
However, Critical Metals remains a development-stage miner, and its shares have historically been highly volatile.
