Fed’s $15.6B Treasury Bill Buys Are Reinvestments, Not QE
The purchases reflect principal payments from agency securities and do not mark the return of quantitative easing. Under existing FOMC instructions, principal from agency debt, mortgage-backed securities, and commercial mortgage-backed securities is reinvested into Treasury bills.
That process replaces agency assets that are paying down and maintains the Federal Reserve’s portfolio strategy. Crucially, the New York Fed’s schedule contains no reserve management purchases.
Those separate operations can increase System Open Market Account holdings when officials judge that more reserves are needed to maintain ample banking conditions. That distinction corrects claims that the entire $15.6 billion program represents a fresh liquidity injection designed to expand reserves.
Instead, the scheduled buying is mechanical reinvestment activity spread across several operations through October 14.
Crypto Traders Track Multi-Week Fed Buys as Bitcoin Tops $78K
The schedule still attracted bullish crypto commentary as Bitcoin traded above $78,000 and Ether moved above $2,500. However, that optimism comes despite a tighter monetary backdrop. On September 16, the FOMC unanimously raised the federal funds target range by 25 basis points to 3.75%–4.00%.
The increase marked the first rate hike in three years, while policymakers said inflation remained elevated and required a return toward 2%. That decision weakens the argument that the Treasury bill purchases signal a broader shift toward monetary stimulus.
The schedule instead shows routine portfolio reinvestment continuing while the Federal Reserve raises short-term borrowing costs. For crypto traders, the repeated purchases may still attract attention as they extend across several weeks rather than one isolated operation.
Yet the $15.6 billion total remains modest and does not constitute new QE. Treasury yields, rate expectations, the dollar, regulation, and overall risk appetite therefore remain drivers for Bitcoin, Ether, and other markets.
