According to Walkinshaw, Donald Trump Jr. and Eric Trump invested in the project through an entity headquartered at Trump Tower. He asked witnesses whether the sons’ investment created a conflict of interest, given their father’s involvement in negotiating the deal and supporting federal funding.
A witness agreed that it did. Walkinshaw also alleged that a company overseen by Lutnick’s sons collected millions in fees from the transaction. Another witness agreed that this arrangement presented a conflict.
Defense Contracts Broaden Scrutiny
Menefee expanded the discussion to other business arrangements involving the president’s relatives. He said Peter Navarro pressed the Pentagon to expedite a $620 million loan to a startup partly owned by Trump Jr.’s investment firm.
The company’s valuation rose from $200 million to $2 billion, Menefee said. He also cited a drone company that awarded Trump Jr. $2.6 million in stock for advisory work before securing an Army order days later.
Menefee said a venture involving another Trump son obtained a $90 million Air Force contract. He also alleged that Melania Trump received $28 million through an Amazon documentary deal.
IRS Lawsuit and Foreign Gift Concerns
Turning to federal finances, Menefee said Trump’s businesses sought $10 billion through a lawsuit against the IRS. He described a resulting $1.8 billion fund as a mechanism to reward presidential allies, including people involved in the January 6 attack.
Menefee then asked about a luxury aircraft from Qatar valued at $400 million. Witness Bellows said such a benefit could raise expectations of intelligence, diplomatic or military concessions.
Those exchanges led Menefee to call for legislation limiting presidential earnings to the official salary. He cited a Common Cause finding that 77% of Americans supported that restriction.
Trump Family Crypto Ventures Face Senate Scrutiny
Similar concerns have reached the Senate over the Trump family’s cryptocurrency interests. Senators, including Elizabeth Warren and Richard Blumenthal, said financial disclosures showed about $1.4 billion in crypto income during Trump’s first year back in office.
They called for hearings into potential foreign influence, citing reports that UAE-linked investors acquired a 49% stake in World Liberty Financial. The senators also questioned whether that investment influenced future U.S. approvals of a $1.4 billion arms sale and advanced AI chip exports to the UAE.
They sought an investigation into those decisions without establishing a connection between the payments and policy approvals.
The hearings underscore rising scrutiny over the overlap between political authority and private business interests. While lawmakers pointed to multiple potential conflicts, no direct evidence has linked financial benefits to policy outcomes. The push for investigations and new restrictions suggests the debate is far from settled.
