Those gains stand out, but percentage growth doesn’t automatically translate into market leadership. Starting volumes matter, too.
Binance Keeps Its Lead as Rivals Gain Ground
Binance remained the heavyweight, generating $307.8 billion in September spot volume, equivalent to a 44.2% market share. That’s a commanding lead over OKX, which recorded $65.8 billion, and Coinbase, at $61.3 billion.
Together, the three largest exchanges accounted for 62.4% of total volume. However, that combined share was down from 64.8% in August. The leaders still dominate, but their grip loosened as other platforms grew faster.
Coinbase’s volume increased 49.8% month over month, while OKX gained 40.3%. Both outpaced the overall market’s 36.5% growth rate.
Does September Signal a Broader Trading Recovery?
The data points show a clear rebound in spot trading activity, but they don’t explain what drove it or whether the momentum will last. One month of growth isn’t proof of a sustained trend.
Still, September’s numbers deliver a clear message: crypto exchange spot volume rose sharply, while Binance retained the top spot and competitors gained share. Whether that broader activity continues into October remains to be seen.
