Three of the four participants —21Shares, HashKey Cloud and UTXO Management— bonded $BTC under self-custody, maintaining control of their funds at all times. Sypher Capital, on the other hand, participated through liquid staking via StackingDAO, a protocol that bonds STX on behalf of the investor and matches it with $BTC, offering institutional access without managing the bonding process directly.
Bitcoin Staking: Yield Without Counterparty
The mechanism that makes this yield possible is Proof of Transfer (PoX), active since January 2021. Under this scheme, Stacks miners compete by sending $BTC to mine blocks, and that $BTC flow is distributed among those who participate in bonding.
Since its activation, PoX has distributed more than 4,200 $BTC —equivalent to more than $500 million— among participants. Genesis Bond bonders access that same yield source. There is no counterparty holding the funds and no slashing mechanism: the worst possible scenario is receiving no rewards, not losing the principal.
Fireblocks, an enterprise platform that secures more than $5 trillion in digital asset transfers annually, deepened its integration with Stacks to offer its institutional clients access to Bitcoin Staking through the custody and compliance tools they already use.
A Roadmap Built on Three Pillars
The Genesis Bond is the first pillar of Stacks’ roadmap. The second, already underway, aims to scale the infrastructure through performance improvements and updates to the protocol’s core. The third contemplates a Bitcoin-native financial layer with loans, yield vaults and products that put bonded capital to work. The PoX-5 hardfork, which activated the system’s technical foundation, was executed on July 30, 2026 at Bitcoin block 960,230, according to Stacks Labs.
Registration for the second bonding period, scheduled for early October, is already open, with limited capacity and several institutions already enrolled.
