$XRP settles transactions in three to five seconds, while Bitcoin usually takes about ten minutes to confirm one.
The gap comes down to one design choice: $XRP does not use mining. Its ledger relies on trusted validator nodes that agree on transactions through voting, skipping the energy-heavy computation Bitcoin’s Proof-of-Work system requires.
How Does Bitcoin’s Proof-Of-Work System Slow Things Down?
Bitcoin, launched in 2009 by the pseudonymous Satoshi Nakamoto, uses Proof-of-Work (PoW). Miners compete to solve a cryptographic puzzle, and whoever solves it first adds the next block. The puzzle is intentionally hard, and that difficulty protects the network from attackers rewriting history.
The tradeoff is speed. A new block arrives roughly every ten minutes, and most users wait for several confirmations before treating a transaction as final, pushing total time well past ten minutes during congestion, when fees also climb.
What Makes The $XRP Ledger Different?
The $XRP Ledger (XRPL) launched in 2012, built by David Schwartz, Jed McCaleb, and Arthur Britto, who later founded Ripple. It uses the $XRP Ledger Consensus Protocol, also called the Ripple Protocol Consensus Algorithm (RPCA):
- Validators propose which transactions belong in the next ledger version.
- Each node checks proposals against its Unique Node List (UNL), a set of validators it trusts.

Uptime Tells A Similar Story
Bitcoin’s documented downtime totals roughly 888 minutes, from incidents in 2010 and 2013, giving it about 99.988 percent historical uptime. The $XRP Ledger’s downtime is about 74 minutes, tied to a 2024 bug and a 2025 consensus drift, putting its uptime near 99.999 percent.
Does Faster Always Mean Better?
Not necessarily. Bitcoin’s mining process makes it one of the most decentralized, censorship-resistant networks available; no single group controls block production, and anyone with the right hardware can mine.
$XRP‘s validator model trades some decentralization for speed. UNLs mean each node chooses which validators to trust, concentrating influence among fewer participants than Bitcoin’s open mining pool. That’s a real tradeoff, not a flaw unique to $XRP.
XRPL validator Hussein Zangana, known as Vet, recently argued this model suits long-term operation better than PoW, since it avoids the ongoing cost of mining incentives. Not everyone agrees speed has translated into adoption; Chainlink’s Zach Rynes recently said he sees no meaningful role for $XRP in finance, a reminder that speed and adoption are separate questions.
Where $XRP Stands Today
As of mid-July 2026, $XRP trades near $1.09, with a market cap around $68 billion, well below its all-time high of $3.84 from January 2018. $XRP spot ETFs posted a $7.18 million weekly net outflow on July 10, ending nine straight weeks of inflows. $XRP already holds commodity status under a March 2026 SEC-CFTC interpretive ruling; the pending CLARITY Act, still stalled in the Senate, would write that status into permanent law.
