What is RippleX & Why Does it Matter for XRP Ledger?

RippleX is the developer ecosystem team inside Ripple (@Ripple) that supports builders on the $XRP Ledger (XRPL). It is not a separate company and not a token, but the unit that writes tooling, proposes protocol upgrades, funds grants, and runs programs so outside developers can ship on XRPL faster. Here is the interesting part: the $XRP Ledger does not need Ripple’s permission to run, yet a large share of what has shipped on the ledger since 2018 traces back to this one team. That makes RippleX one of the most consequential names in the $XRP ecosystem that casual holders rarely look into.

Where Did RippleX Come From?

RippleX started life under a different name. In May 2018, Ripple announced Xpring, an initiative to grow an ecosystem around $XRP through a mix of investments, grants, and incubation, as TechCrunch reported at the time. In December 2019, Xpring formally launched as a platform offering protocols, tools, and services.

In October 2020, Ripple rebranded Xpring to RippleX in a blog post titled “Hello (again), World!” The mission stayed the same: remove the friction developers face when integrating open blockchain technologies, primarily the $XRP Ledger and the Interledger Protocol, into their applications.

One more housekeeping step followed. In 2021, Ripple retired the standalone ripplex.io website after developers asked for a single, clear portal. Documentation, community resources, and tooling moved to xrpl.org, which remains the main hub today. The RippleX team itself never went anywhere. It continued under the same name and posts as RippleX (@RippleXDev) on X.

Ripple describes RippleX as a team that provides XRPL developers with the infrastructure, tools, services, programs, and support needed to build for businesses, consumers, institutions, and governments. The unit is led by Markus Infanger (@markusinfanger), SVP of RippleX, with engineering headed by J. Ayo Akinyele (@ja_akinyele).

What Does RippleX Actually Build?

The team’s output falls into four broad buckets:

  • Core protocol work. RippleX engineers have driven amendments and standards including native NFT support (XLS-20, live since October 2022), the on-ledger automated market maker (XLS-30, activated in March 2024), Multi-Purpose Tokens aimed at tokenized real-world assets, permissioned domains and DEX features for regulated players, and the XRPL EVM sidechain, which went live in June 2025 with Axelar handling cross-chain connectivity. David Schwartz (@JoelKatz), the original XRPL architect and now CTO Emeritus at Ripple, remains a visible voice around this protocol work.
  • Developer tooling and infrastructure. This includes the official client libraries such as xrpl.js and xrpl-py, documentation on xrpl.org, public testnets and devnets, and Clio, an optimized API server that stores ledger data more efficiently and takes request load off xrpld, the core server software formerly known as rippled. More recently RippleX shipped an AI Starter Kit for agent-driven payments supporting both $XRP and $RLUSD.
  • Programs and funding. RippleX runs a bug bounty tied to Ripple’s 1 billion $XRP ecosystem pledge, alongside grants, hackathons, and the annual Apex conference.
  • Ecosystem partnerships. The unit works on institutional use cases spanning tokenization, stablecoins including $RLUSD, cross-chain interoperability, and emerging AI-agent payment standards such as x402.

Why Does It Matter for the $XRP Ledger?

A blockchain is only as useful as what people build on it. XRPL has strong raw ingredients: settlement finality in 3 to 5 seconds, fees measured in fractions of a cent, a DEX built into the protocol, and an uninterrupted track record stretching back to 2012. None of that generates activity by itself. Developers do.

RippleX is the best-resourced contributor working on exactly that problem. Every SDK it maintains, every amendment it proposes, and every grant it pays out lowers the cost of building on XRPL. More builders means more applications in payments, DeFi, tokenization, identity, FX, and newer areas like autonomous AI-agent commerce. That activity feeds back into demand for the ledger and its native asset $XRP, which serves as the network’s settlement and liquidity layer.

Does Ripple Control the $XRP Ledger?

No, and the distinction matters. Anyone can run an XRPL validator, and protocol changes only activate when more than 80% of validators support an amendment continuously for two weeks. The $XRP Ledger Foundation (@XRPLF), independent developers, validators, and the wider open-source community govern and maintain the network alongside Ripple.

Ripple, through RippleX, is a major contributor and a heavy commercial user of the ledger. It is not the owner. Its amendment proposals have been voted down or delayed by validators before, which is the system working as designed. The community underlined that independence in June 2026, when version 3.2.0 formally renamed the core server software from rippled to xrpld, dropping the last piece of Ripple branding from the software that powers the network.

Eight years on from Xpring, RippleX is still building, from a freshly shipped AI-agent payments kit to a lending protocol now in front of validators, and the $XRP Ledger keeps collecting the results.
