Trump’s Iran Strike Threat Keeps Bitcoin (BTC) Above Its $80,000 Cost Basis

Trump Puts Sunday on the Table

President Donald Trump said on Sunday that the United States could strike Iran as soon as today, or reach a deal with Tehran instead, and the Bitcoin ($BTC) price is left carrying that headline risk through a weekend when traditional markets are shut. Our live monitoring shows Bitcoin ($BTC) near $80,617 at press time, little changed over the past 24 hours, but the level sits only a few hundred dollars above the $79,220 low printed on Saturday before the market recovered to close the day at $80,888. The past three weeks show how these headlines trade, in both directions. On October 8, Trump pledged to hold off on strikes until the midterm elections on November 3; Bitcoin dipped to $80,393 that day but closed at $81,754. The relief faded fast. On Thursday, October 22, a report laid out post-midterm US and Israeli strike plans, and Bitcoin fell from Wednesday’s high of $84,898 to $80,939, closing the day at $81,416. US spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs) lost $635.49 million that day, a day after drawing $528.40 million. Those flows flipped direction within a single session, showing how quickly institutional demand reverses around strike headlines. Across this month, escalation headlines have cut Bitcoin by 2% to 5% intraday, while the pledges have produced no lasting rally. Actual strikes give a mixed guide: when the war began on February 28, Bitcoin ($BTC) fell to $63,030 and closed at $66,973; after the early September strikes it dipped to $76,264 before jumping 5.08% on September 3. Because Bitcoin trades around the clock, it would take the first hit from any strike before equity desks reopen on Tuesday, and thin weekend liquidity can widen each move. A deal could cool those worries, though the October 8 pledge showed relief can be modest.

Glassnode’s $80,000 Cost Line

The level below Saturday’s low is not an arbitrary chart marker. On-chain analytics from Glassnode place the average cost basis of spot ETF and treasury-company investors between $80,000 and $81,500, and a daily close under $80,000 would put the average of those buyers underwater, alongside the retail holders who HODL at the same levels. The firm’s True Market Mean, a model that estimates the aggregate cost basis of active market participants, sits near $77,600 and becomes the next reference if $80,000 gives way on a daily close. A weekend strike could test that line quickly, since Bitcoin ($BTC) would be the only major market open to price it. Institutional allocation keeps widening elsewhere, with Switzerland’s regulator FINMA having approved the country’s first retail Bitcoin fund, so the cohort now clustered near cost continues to gain new entry channels. Derivatives data already recorded the first clearing of leverage. Roughly $543.68 million in positions were liquidated over the 24 hours to Sunday, with longs absorbing about 85% of the total, or $461.19 million, a signature of forced deleveraging rather than spot selling that echoes the earlier wave in which longs took 86% of a $452.9 million liquidation total. Macro hedges add pressure from outside crypto: Bitcoin’s correlation with gold set an eight-year record in September and remains near it, while its dollar correlation sits among its most negative, so a rush into the dollar would weigh on both assets. The regional risk is live rather than hypothetical, with Saudi air defenses intercepting a missile as the strike threats built over the weekend. Oil adds an inflation risk of its own, with Brent crude at $117.30 on Friday, and any strike would likely push it higher before the Federal Reserve announces its rate decision on Wednesday, October 28.
