Rather than replacing wallets or forcing asset migrations, the proposal focuses on upgrading account security through an optional process that can be completed over time.

Every Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) network currently relies on public-key cryptography that classical computers cannot realistically break. However, researchers have long warned that sufficiently advanced quantum computers could eventually solve mathematical problems that protect today’s digital signatures. Although experts continue to debate when that capability may arrive, many security specialists agree that preparation should begin well in advance.
SIP-5 proposes allowing users to attach a quantum-resistant key to their existing accounts while keeping the same address, balances, token approvals, transaction history, and smart contract interactions. This design minimizes disruption across the ecosystem and avoids the complexity of moving funds to entirely new wallets. The proposal remains open for discussion through governance, giving validators, developers, and the wider ecosystem time to evaluate its technical implications before any implementation decision.

One important aspect of the proposal is its gradual migration strategy. Users can decide when to upgrade instead of facing an immediate deadline.
