India is becoming one of the most important markets for global technology companies, according to CoinDCX co-founder Sumit Gupta, after Sam Altman revealed that users in the country have already created more than one billion images with ChatGPT Images 2.0.
Gupta reacted to the milestone by calling India the “ultimate distribution and stress test market” for founders building global digital products.
In a post on X, Gupta pointed to India’s scale and internet adoption speed as key reasons behind the trend. He noted that the country has more than 1 billion internet users, around 750 million smartphone users, and some of the cheapest mobile data prices in the world at roughly $0.09 per GB.
According to Gupta, products that survive India’s scale and usage pressure become easier to expand globally afterward.
He added that India is no longer just a testing ground for international companies and is now becoming a must-win market for next-generation digital firms.
Sam Altman Highlights India’s AI Adoption
Gupta’s comments came shortly after OpenAI CEO Sam Altman shared fresh usage numbers for the company’s latest AI image model.
On X, Altman wrote that ChatGPT Images 2.0 “loves India,” adding that users in the country have already generated more than one billion images using the tool.
The milestone arrived less than a month after OpenAI launched the upgraded image model as a response to rising competition in AI-generated visuals, including Google’s Gemini Nano Banana 2.
India has quickly emerged as one of the strongest adoption markets for AI tools. Users across the country are actively using image generation for social media posts, portraits, professional visuals, design concepts, edits, and creative content.
The scale of usage also highlights how quickly AI consumer products can spread in India once pricing and accessibility align with mass-market internet users.
Malpractice Concerns Rise
The rapid adoption of AI image tools has also renewed concerns around deepfakes, manipulated media, and non-consensual image generation. In India, AI-generated political content, altered celebrity images, and fake media clips have increasingly drawn public attention as image generation tools become more accessible.
Tamil Nadu Finance Minister Palanivel Thiaga Rajan previously stated that audio clips falsely portraying him praising the opposition were fabricated. Authorities have also raised concerns around non-consensual deepfakes, manipulated influencer content, and AI-generated child-related imagery, urging users to report such material immediately.
As AI image tools become more advanced and widely accessible, concerns continue growing over potential misuse, reputational harm, and the unauthorized generation of personal images.
