Crypto exchange shutdowns were once seen as an indicator of an impending market bottom. But that pattern may no longer hold.
Today, Bitcoin’s weakness appears to be showing up elsewhere… particularly in Spot ETF flows.
Considering ETFs were (and still are) considered a sign of institutional credibility, their recent red patch makes one wonder: have institutional flows become a better measure of market sentiment than exchange failures?
Exchange shutdowns: A weak BTC bottom sign?
Over the years, there’s been a strong impression that exchange shutdowns can help identify a market low. Recent data does not support that idea.
Per data from Alphractal, in 2026, only nine crypto exchanges and trading platforms have announced or completed shutdowns. That’s the lowest yearly count in at least eight years and well below levels seen in the previous market cycle.
These closures also happened for many reasons, including insolvency, regulation, liquidity problems, hacks, fraud, and ordinary business decisions. Treating every closure as evidence of a Bitcoin bottom ignores that context.
AMBCrypto previously reported that crypto exchange BitMEX will end operations on the 23rd of September after an 11-year run. Growing competition and regulatory pressure contributed to its decline, despite the exchange reporting no loss of customer funds.
ETFs are where the caution is
Consider this.
The latest weekly Bitcoin ETF reading showed net outflows of $11.64 million, while Bitcoin traded near $64,984. The funds still hold about $78.71 billion in net assets, so it’s not that institutional participation has disappeared.
However, it is proof that some investors are stepping back during hard times.
Note the contrast. Crypto businesses shut down less often, but caution is still apparent in the products built to attract mainstream capital. In this cycle, tracking ETF netflows may tell us more about confidence than counting failed exchanges.
