Mastercard and Borderless.xyz are piloting the use of Mastercard Crypto Credential, the card network’s verification system for digital asset transactions, in cross-border stablecoin payments, the companies said Wednesday.
The pilot targets a bottleneck in stablecoin payment networks: every new counterparty relationship triggers a fresh round of compliance verification, so verification work grows with each provider added. Crypto Credential is meant to supply standardized assurance signals that other participants can plug into their own approval and risk processes instead of re-running checks.
“One of the biggest friction points for stablecoin payment operators isn’t the payments. It’s that compliance doesn’t scale the same way the network does,” said Kevin Lehtiniitty, CEO and co-founder of Borderless.xyz. “Correspondent banking solved this decades ago: originating compliance trusted downstream, no re-execution at every counterparty. Mastercard is applying that model to digital asset payments. Borderless.xyz is the network it runs through.”
The pilot starts Wednesday with live transactions rather than a sandbox and has no set end date, Lehtiniitty told The Defiant, with the launch marked at a joint Mastercard and Borderless.xyz event. Whether it graduates to production will come down to the number of providers participating and the volume transacted, he said.
Borderless.xyz operates a stablecoin orchestration network that it says connects wallet infrastructure to more than 15 licensed stablecoin providers across over 100 countries through a single API. The New York-based company raised $3 million in pre-seed funding led by Amity Ventures in October 2024.
Stablecoins in circulation total about $308 billion, according to DefiLlama, with Tether’s USDT accounting for $183 billion and Circle’s USDC for $72 billion.
Single-Audit Compliance
The three network participants joining the pilot — Infinia, Walapay and Koywe — will be among the first stablecoin payment operators to run on what the companies call a single-audit compliance model at network scale, according to the announcement. Infinia and Koywe focus on payments in Latin America and other emerging markets, while Walapay provides stablecoin payment APIs across more than 180 countries.
A credential attests that a provider has put a user through a compliance program meeting standards laid out by Mastercard, Lehtiniitty said. Each provider runs its own KYC and KYB checks according to its local regulatory requirements, and the credential confirms that verification has been completed — “not that a central authority audited it,” he said. Mastercard audits providers against the standards it sets.
Other providers on the network can rely on the attestation to speed up their own onboarding of counterparties, though Lehtiniitty said it “does not eliminate their own regulatory and compliance obligations.”
Mastercard introduced Crypto Credential in April 2023 as a set of standards for verifying users and service providers on blockchain networks, and the system went live in May 2024 with peer-to-peer transactions between exchange users in Latin America and Europe. It lets verified users transact with aliases instead of wallet addresses and supports the exchange of Travel Rule metadata. Mastercard has since extended it to self-custody wallets with Polygon Labs and Mercuryo.
From Start Path to Pilot
The pilot deepens a relationship that began when Borderless.xyz joined Start Path, Mastercard’s startup engagement program, in September 2025. In March, Mastercard named the company a launch partner of its Crypto Partner Program, which counts more than 85 participants including Circle, PayPal and Ripple. Several of the pilot participants are also Start Path alumni, according to the announcement.
“Our relationship with Borderless.xyz began through Start Path and has continued to grow as the digital asset ecosystem has matured,” said Raj Dhamodharan, executive vice president of blockchain and digital assets at Mastercard. “Today, we’re excited to take the next step together, exploring how Mastercard Crypto Credential can help bring greater trust and confidence to stablecoin payment flows across a growing network of participants.”
Mastercard’s Stablecoin Buildout
The pilot adds to a series of stablecoin moves by Mastercard this year. In March, the company agreed to acquire stablecoin infrastructure firm BVNK for up to $1.8 billion. It has also won a New York BitLicense to deepen its stablecoin settlement business and opened its card-settlement network to eight blockchains, adding weekend and holiday settlement cycles.
Asked how the pilot fits alongside the pending BVNK deal, Lehtiniitty said the acquisition “gives Mastercard strong capabilities in G5 currencies,” while a global stablecoin network requires something else. “Mastercard will need to work with local providers across emerging markets,” he said, speaking from Borderless.xyz’s perspective.
