The world’s largest cryptocurrency exchange, Binance, has announced a major revision of its Portfolio Margin platform parameters. The key change is a twofold increase in the maximum leverage available for $XRP and Ripple’s U.S. dollar stablecoin, Ripple USD ($RLUSD), from 5x to 10x.
The new limits will take effect this Friday, Aug. 21, at 6:00 a.m. UTC, while the technical work required to update the system is expected to take approximately 30 minutes.
The increase to 10x officially puts $XRP and Ripple USD on an equal footing with major market heavyweights, including BNB, SOL, ADA, and DOGE. The decision moves Ripple’s products into Binance’s highest liquidity category.
From a trading strategy perspective, the introduction of 10x leverage for $RLUSD will allow institutional and retail traders to use the new regulated stablecoin as a highly efficient collateral asset for scaling up positions in $XRP itself.
Survival guide for the new margin conditions
The Binance team emphasized that the new multipliers will directly affect the Unified Maintenance Margin Ratio (uniMMR). Traders need to take the following steps before Friday’s deadline:
- Recalculate collateral weights: The leverage increase for $XRP and $RLUSD improves their collateral efficiency. However, the collateral value of deposited tokens from the reduced-leverage list, such as ZRO or KMNO, will decline.
- Check open positions: To avoid the automatic cancellation of orders or forced liquidations caused by sudden changes in collateral weights, traders should adjust their margin ratios before 6:00 a.m. UTC on Aug. 21.
By doubling the limits, Binance is also raising the level of risk in the market. Leverage of 10x is a classic double-edged sword: it multiplies not only potential profits but also the speed at which traders can lose their entire capital. At this level of leverage, even a small price movement against a position can trigger immediate liquidation.
Without strict risk management and an understanding of the mathematics behind uniMMR, aggressive leveraged trading turns from systematic trading into a gamble in which the mathematical advantage always remains with the platform.
