Dogecoin currently trades in the red, as are the majority of crypto assets in the market. At the time of writing, $DOGE was down 0.15% in the last 24 hours to $0.699 and down 0.42% weekly.
Amid the quiet mood in the market, Dogecoin Foundation developer Paulo Vidal shared a fun tweet which centers around the “88” number. “Somehow 88 feels like a very Dogecoin number,” Vidal said in conclusion while sharing the reason for this take.
In a separate tweet, Vidal shared a fun fact highlighting that the Dogecoin Genesis block Coinbase Reward was 88 $DOGE while sharing a screenshot to back this assertion.

The Dogecoin genesis block (block #0) included a Coinbase transaction with a block reward of exactly 88 $DOGE. When Dogecoin launched on December 6, 2013, it initially used a randomized block reward system before transitioning to a fixed reward model in March 2014.
The rewards for blocks 0–100,000 were randomized between 1 $DOGE and 1,000,000 $DOGE until the 600,000th block, when it was fixed to 10,000 Dogecoin per block.
Mining rewards—consisting of 10,000 Dogecoin per block plus transaction fees associated with the transactions included in the block—are awarded to the miner who discovers a valid Proof of Work for a new block before any other miner in the network.
Dogecoin speculation returns
According to onchain data, Dogecoin speculation has returned to October 2025 levels as futures positioning rebuilds to levels last seen when Dogecoin traded at three times its current price. Dogecoin’s price has dropped below $0.07, down roughly 70% in the last year.
On major exchanges like Binance and OKX, long positions significantly exceed shorts, creating the danger of forced liquidations and increased selling if prices fall further.
Currently, more than three accounts are betting on a rise for every one betting against a drop, as seen in the Binance long/short ratio (Accounts) provided by CoinGlass, which is currently at 3.00.
Open interest in $DOGE futures has increased to almost $1.18 billion, with speculative bets in coin terms now approaching October 2025 levels despite the significantly lower prices.
