Onchain Lending Fees Plunge 50% as Morpho Bucks the Trend

The lending sector’s contraction occurred against a broader decline in blockchain industry revenues. According to 1kx, total blockchain revenues are projected to reach approximately $100 billion in 2026, down 30% from the roughly $140 billion generated in 2025. The decline broadly mirrors the decrease in bitcoin’s average price over the same period.

Despite the downturn, decentralized finance (DeFi) and other financial applications remained the industry’s largest revenue-generating category, accounting for approximately $65 billion, or 66% of projected blockchain revenues.

While Aave struggled with declining deposits, Morpho emerged as one of the sector’s more resilient platforms. The protocol, which ranked second among lending markets by fees, generated $62 million in user-paid fees during the third quarter of 2026, representing a slight increase despite the broader market contraction.

The report attributes Morpho’s relative strength to its curator-based lending model, under which specialized risk managers oversee individual lending markets. According to 1kx, much of the fees generated through Morpho’s lending markets accrued to risk curators such as Steakhouse and Gauntlet rather than directly to the protocol.

The contrasting performances of Aave and Morpho illustrate how differences in lending market structures and risk management can influence revenue generation during periods of reduced market activity. Morpho’s performance also helped secure its position among the 20 leading blockchain protocols by user-paid fees in 2026, according to the report.

Institutional Yield Strategies Face Risk and Return Trade-Offs

The downturn in lending market revenues has also brought renewed attention to how investors can generate predictable returns without assuming excessive exposure to cryptocurrency price volatility.

Frank Hepworth, CEO and founder of New Market Trading, said institutions seeking relatively stable yields during prolonged market consolidation should prioritize less volatile assets rather than rely heavily on cryptocurrency-backed lending.

According to Hepworth, stablecoins deployed across actively managed DeFi yield vaults can provide one approach, although investors must account for the additional risks introduced by third-party platforms and strategies. He also pointed to tokenized government Treasuries and private credit arrangements, including those offered by Maple Finance, as alternatives that institutions are increasingly adopting onchain.

Hepworth cautioned that the economics of lending bitcoin are less compelling, particularly when compared with other strategies available during strong market rallies.

“Locking up $BTC is almost always a poor risk-reward. Real $BTC demand to borrow is thin, so the 1 to 4% on offer mostly comes from token emissions, while you take on derivative, counterparty and smart contract risk to earn it,” Hepworth said.

He argued that the opportunity cost becomes particularly pronounced during bull markets, when the annualized premium on CME bitcoin futures can rise well above the returns available through fixed-rate lending products.

“In bull runs it gets worse: CME basis often runs well into the teens, so whoever holds your $BTC can earn far more on it than they pay you. You carry their risk for a fraction of the spread,” he added.

His assessment highlights a potential challenge for bitcoin holders seeking yield: Fixed lending returns may fail to compensate investors adequately for the risks assumed or the upside opportunities forgone. Hepworth identified several strategies that could still allow investors to generate returns, including providing liquidity to closely correlated bitcoin-backed assets, such as cbBTC and WBTC. He also suggested borrowing stablecoins against bitcoin collateral and deploying the borrowed funds into higher-yielding opportunities.

Still, Hepworth warned that liquidity pools involving wrapped bitcoin expose investors to risks associated with the underlying tokens, while leveraged stablecoin strategies can become vulnerable when borrowing costs rise or collateral values decline. He also highlighted covered-call strategies, which involve selling options against bitcoin holdings to collect premiums, as an increasingly popular approach.

“It looks attractive when IV is high to earn yield on your $BTC, but the premium is high for a reason: The market is pricing big moves,” he said.

He warned that investors employing covered calls during aggressive rallies risk having their bitcoin sold at the option’s strike price, potentially forfeiting further upside. For institutions seeking more predictable returns, Hepworth suggested that structured credit products combining a contractual base return with performance-linked profit sharing could provide a more balanced approach.

“The best structure would be a contractual base return for predictable institutional income, with a hurdle-gated profit-share on top so investors only share in outperformance once that base is delivered,” he explained.

Tokenized Assets Emerge as New Lending Market Opportunity

Despite declining onchain lending activity, 1kx identifies tokenized real-world assets (RWAs) as an emerging battleground for Aave and Morpho, particularly tokenized U.S. Treasuries and private credit.

The report highlights a Sentora-curated Morpho vault offering PYUSD loans against Figure’s PRIME home-equity token, alongside GPU-backed lending through USD.ai.

These developments support Hepworth’s view that institutions may increasingly favor stablecoins, tokenized government debt and structured credit over low-yielding bitcoin lending. However, such products still carry counterparty, liquidity and smart contract risks.

With lending fees down approximately 50% year over year, Morpho’s resilience and growing demand for tokenized collateral suggest a shift toward specialized credit markets. Their long-term appeal will depend on whether returns adequately compensate institutions for the risks involved.
