DeFi Platform Drops Consumer App, Pivots to Big Tech OTC Lending After 75% Revenue Crash

A DeFi lending platform that once brought in $80 million in revenue has quietly dismantled its consumer-facing app, cutting off retail users entirely, as its OTC lending desk to tech giants now holds $260 million in outstanding loans. The pivot, detailed in the original report, reveals how some crypto-native companies are radically reorienting toward institutional demand after a brutal bear market erased retail exuberance.

The Bear Market Reckoning

During the last cycle’s peak, the platform raked in $80 million from a user base that included retail borrowers and lenders. As asset prices collapsed and on-chain activity dried up, those revenues cratered to just $20 million—a 75% drop that forced a full strategic rethink. Rather than ride out the downturn hoping for a retail revival, the team made the call to shut down the consumer interface and reposition the lending infrastructure as a private over-the-counter service.

This kind of hard exit from consumer DeFi is not an isolated story. Many protocols that thrived on yield-chasing retail users during the bull run are now struggling to retain liquidity. The platform’s OTC lending business, already at $260 million in outstanding loans, is now its fastest-growing segment. Management expects that figure to hit $1 billion by the end of the year, turning what was once a side product into the company’s main revenue engine.

OTC Lending Takes Center Stage

OTC lending allows institutions—hedge funds, family offices, and now large tech firms—to borrow digital assets directly without going through automated lending pools. The appeal lies in bespoke terms, deeper liquidity, and the absence of on-chain slippage that can rattle public markets. For a DeFi platform, it also means fewer user acquisition costs and a steadier fee stream from a handful of large, creditworthy counterparties.

The $1 billion target is ambitious, but not unprecedented given current demand. The bear market did not kill institutional appetite for crypto borrowing; it shifted it away from public platforms to private, negotiated desks. The same forces that have driven real-world asset tokenization past $20 billion on-chain—chronicled in BlockchainReporter’s Weekly Tokenization Roundup—are pushing DeFi toward a more institutionally friendly architecture. The platform’s pivot reflects this broader rebalancing.

Still, the shift from consumer DeFi to institutional lending carries reputation and regulatory risk. Serving big tech backdoors often means running a more centralized operation, with know-your-counterparty checks and negotiated legal frameworks that undercut the ethos of permissionless finance. Whether regulators classify such OTC desks as unregistered securities brokers or money transmitters remains an open question, especially as banks lobby hard against crypto legislation. The political fight around the biggest crypto bill in U.S. history shows how fragile the legislative path remains.

A Broader Institutional Shift

The platform’s move is a microcosm of a structural change in DeFi. As retail volumes have dried up, the user count that once drew venture capital has become a liability rather than an asset. Maintaining a sleek consumer app with 24/7 support, front-end compliance, and liquidity mining incentives is expensive. By contrast, operating a lean OTC desk for a few dozen deep-pocketed clients requires far less overhead and can generate higher margins.

Even as developer activity on major blockchains like Ethereum and Solana remains robust, as tracked by BlockchainReporter, the nature of building is changing. More teams are forking established lending code to create white-label institutional products, while consumer-facing dapps struggle to retain deposits. The surprise is not that one platform abandoned its consumer app; it is that more have not done so yet.

What remains uncertain is whether the platform can sustain its OTC growth without the brand halo of a public DeFi app. Lending relationships with tech giants often require a level of operational polish and legal compliance that freshly pivoted crypto startups may lack. Reaching $1 billion in outstanding loans would serve as a strong proof point, but the gap between a few bespoke deals and a scaled lending book is substantial.

The market will be watching whether other DeFi names follow suit. The bear market has already winnowed the field; the next phase may reward those who abandon consumer ambitions entirely and become the quiet plumbing for firms that just want to borrow assets efficiently. For a sector that once promised to bank the unbanked, the journey into the balance sheets of big tech is a telling reversal.
