The Abu Dhabi Global Market (ADGM) has officially recognized Tether Gold (XAUT) as an Accepted Spot Commodity. In a Monday announcement, Tether, the stablecoin issuer behind XAUT, noted that the recognition allows firms in ADGM to offer XAUT, subject to their own relevant regulatory permissions and approval to use Accepted Spot Commodities.
Speaking on the development, Tether CEO Paolo Ardoino stated that ADGM’s recognition of XAUT demonstrates the UAE’s continued leadership in digital asset regulation. According to Ardoino, bringing XAUT into the ADGM’s Spot Commodities framework creates room for firms with the relevant regulatory permission to work with a token backed by physical gold. He considers the move crucial for tokenized real-world assets and for the growth of practical, regulated digital finance in the Middle East.
Regulators Role in RWA Tokenization
From a broader real-world asset tokenization review, the latest move by ADGM highlights how regulators are quietly dictating the future of tokenization, not by banning technology, but by cherry-picking which underlying assets are allowed to clear legal hurdles first.
They appear to set the pace by creating fast-track operational lanes for low-risk, cash-equivalent assets while leaving equities and complex debt tied up in legal red tape. Regulators are establishing a status quo where sovereign and institutional paper wins the blockchain race.
Notably, regulators have opted to greenlight assets that serve as foundational economic building blocks. That allows them to minimize systemic risks while allowing the market to test distributed ledger technology (DLT) infrastructure.
Tether is Engaging With Regulators
Tether highlighted that ADGM’s XAUT approval follows continued close engagement with the regulator to demonstrate the resilience, transparency, and compliance-focused approach of Tether’s operations, and gives firms in ADGM a clearer path to offer services involving XAUT within a regulated framework.
Meanwhile, Arvind Ramamurthy, Chief Market Development Officer at ADGM, affirmed the group’s resolve to continue advancing a trusted, well-regulated environment that enables responsible innovation across digital assets and tokenized real-world assets.
According to Ramamurthy, the recognition of XAUT as an Accepted Spot Commodity further strengthens the breadth of products and services available to firms operating from ADGM, supporting the continued scaling of business activity within ADGM and Abu Dhabi’s growing financial ecosystem.
