Sentient Launches $42 Million Fund to Back Open-Source AGI Builders

As billions of dollars continue flowing into proprietary AI companies, one organization is placing a major bet on a different future for artificial intelligence.

Sentient Foundation has announced a $42 million Open Source AGI Grant and Investment Program, one of the largest funding initiatives dedicated exclusively to supporting developers, researchers, startups, and public-goods projects building open-source artificial general intelligence.

The initiative reflects a growing belief among parts of the AI community that the future of intelligence should remain accessible rather than controlled by a handful of companies.

And yes, the number was chosen intentionally.

According to the Foundation, the $42 million commitment is a nod to The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, where 42 is famously described as “the answer to life, the universe, and everything.”

A Counterweight to Closed AI

The announcement comes at a time when AI funding is increasingly concentrated among a small group of companies.

OpenAI, Anthropic, xAI, Google, Meta, and others have collectively attracted tens of billions of dollars in investment as competition to build increasingly powerful AI models accelerates.

While open-source AI projects have produced some of the industry’s most important innovations, funding has often lagged behind.

Sentient says its new program is designed to address that gap.

“The future of intelligence should be built by the many, not controlled by the few,” said Sachi Kamiya, Director of Venture and Growth at the Sentient Foundation. “A few companies are trying to become the OPEC of intelligence — meter it, price it, decide who gets it. We’re making it air.”

Grants for Builders, Capital for Startups

The program will operate through two separate tracks. The first is a grant program aimed at researchers, open-source developers, maintainers, and public-goods initiatives. Funding will be provided on a non-dilutive basis, meaning recipients will not be required to give up equity or ownership of their work.

The second track focuses on startups building commercial businesses around open-source AI technologies. These investments will use founder-friendly structures designed to help companies scale while maintaining openness as part of their core strategy.

According to the Foundation, projects do not need to open-source their entire technology stack. Instead, applicants must demonstrate that at least one meaningful component of their project remains openly available and contributes significantly to adoption or ecosystem value.

Open Source Is Having a Moment

The launch comes amid growing momentum for open-source AI. Over the past two years, projects such as DeepSeek, Ollama, llama.cpp, and LeRobot have demonstrated that open models and developer communities can compete with far larger, venture-backed organizations.

At the same time, open-source models continue closing the performance gap with proprietary alternatives.

Sentient believes the latter opportunity remains significantly underfunded.

“Open models are improving at an extraordinary pace,” Kamiya said. “When they catch up, and they will, the people building on them should win, not pay rent on intelligence forever.”

The trend has fueled debate about whether future AI value will accrue primarily to model creators or to the developers, applications, and ecosystems built on top of open infrastructure.

Building an Open AGI Ecosystem

The Foundation plans to evaluate applicants based on technical merit, ecosystem impact, openness, and long-term potential.

An advisory council composed of figures from the open-source AI community will help guide funding decisions and shape program priorities.

The initiative also launches with support from a growing network of ecosystem participants, including Alibaba Cloud, Franklin Templeton, Princeton University, and the Indian Institute of Science.

Sentient argues that many of today’s most important technologies—from the internet itself to modern cloud infrastructure—were built on open standards and open-source software. The organization believes AI should follow the same path.

The Bigger Battle Over AI’s Future

The announcement reflects a larger debate unfolding across the industry.

As AI systems become more powerful, questions around ownership, access, and control are becoming increasingly important.

Will future AI infrastructure be controlled by a handful of corporations, or will open-source alternatives remain competitive?

Sentient is betting that openness will continue to matter.

With $42 million now committed to supporting developers, researchers, and startups building in the open, the Foundation is attempting to ensure that the next generation of AI innovation remains accessible to anyone who wants to participate.

Applications for the Open Source AGI Grant and Investment Program are now open and will be reviewed on a rolling basis.
