The system uses $XRP as a bridge asset between currencies, allowing institutions to move funds within seconds instead of days. Moreover, the model removes the need for banks to maintain expensive foreign currency reserves across multiple countries.
How Ripple’s ODL Changes International Payments
Ripple’s On-Demand Liquidity, commonly called ODL, operates through RippleNet, the company’s global payment network. RippleNet connects more than 300 financial institutions across over 55 countries. However, only ODL transactions actively use $XRP during settlement.
Under the system, financial institutions convert local currency into $XRP at the moment a transaction begins. The $XRP then travels through the $XRP Ledger almost instantly. Afterward, the receiving exchange converts the $XRP into the destination currency. This process eliminates the traditional requirement for pre-funded overseas accounts.
Additionally, the $XRP Ledger supports around 1,500 transactions per second. Transaction fees also remain extremely low, averaging roughly $0.0002. These features make the system attractive for banks and payment firms seeking faster international transfers.
Why Banks and Payment Firms Are Paying Attention
Traditional international transfers rely heavily on correspondent banking networks. Each intermediary bank adds processing time and deducts service fees. Consequently, businesses often face settlement periods lasting several business days. Transfer fees can also range between $25 and $50 per transaction.

ODL changes this structure by sourcing liquidity only when needed. Therefore, institutions no longer need to hold large sums of dormant capital in foreign markets. This approach improves cash flow efficiency and reduces operational expenses.
Moreover, faster settlement times help businesses manage international payroll, supplier payments, and remittances more efficiently. Payment companies also benefit from increased transaction transparency because transfers complete within seconds.
$XRP’s Role in Ripple’s Payment Ecosystem
$XRP remains central to Ripple’s liquidity strategy because it bridges different fiat currencies during transactions. Significantly, the token provides real-time liquidity without requiring direct currency pairs between countries.
$XRP traded at $1.30 during the latest market update. The token recorded a 24-hour trading volume exceeding $1.8 billion.
However, $XRP declined 4.7% during the previous seven days despite steady market activity. Its circulating supply currently stands at 62 billion tokens, giving the asset a market capitalization above $80 billion.
