India’s Solar Surplus Hits a New Problem: Could Bitcoin Mining Help?

India has a growing solar power surplus, with the excess supply now creating a fresh problem. When high solar energy is generated, the country can produce more electricity than the grid can absorb. This could lead to some of the power being curtailed or left unused. While this highlights the need for better ways to manage the surplus, Bitcoin mining emerges as a potential way to put the excess energy into use.

India’s Solar Boom is Creating a Problem, But What’s the Role of Bitcoin Mining?

On September 5, Indian entrepreneur Prafull Billore shared an X post, raising concerns about the surplus energy going unused in the country. While more power will be generated during sunny days, limited storage makes it difficult to save the extra energy. This leads to the wastage of a significant amount of power. He noted,

“The problem isn’t production. It’s the grid and storage. Solar floods the system during sunny hours, but India’s infrastructure can’t absorb or store it fast enough, so 11.5 percent of capacity goes unused.”

Here, Bitcoin mining could be seen as an effective way to use some of India’s excess solar power. Usually, mining operations need a lot of electricity. At the same time, they can also adjust their power use based on availability. This means that miners could potentially work more during peak solar hours, when electricity production is high. If not used in any way, the power may go unused.

8 TWh of Solar Power Goes Unused

Billore also shared an example to further explain his point. India reportedly generated around 8 terawatt-hours (TWh) of solar power that could not be used. This shows that the country no longer faces difficulty in producing energy. But the real challenge lies in finding a way to use the energy whenever available.

Notably, the surplus mainly comes during peak sunlight hours. During this time, solar plants can produce more electricity than the grid can take. If there is not enough storage capacity, or it cannot be moved elsewhere, the power has to be curtailed.

How Bitcoin Mining Could Use India’s Surplus Power?

It is worth noting that Bitcoin mining uses powerful computers. These systems need a large amount of electricity to operate. As India produces a large amount of energy, of which a portion is being wasted, Bitcoin mining is a potential option. Instead of allowing the surplus energy to be wasted, it could be used for Bitcoin mining.

Countries Are Turning Renewable Energy Into Bitcoin Mining Power

The possibility of India using its excess energy to mine Bitcoin can be strengthened by considering global examples. Many countries are now turning their renewable energy into a power source for Bitcoin mining.

For example, in Brazil, excess renewable power has attracted mining companies looking for cheaper electricity. Some projects have explored the country’s solar and wind power to run mining operations more cheaply and efficiently.

Bhutan is another strong example. As the country has abundant hydropower, the government has partnered with mining companies to use this power for large-scale Bitcoin mining. As a result, Bhutan is the 7th largest country holding Bitcoin, with its portfolio now consisting of 4,973 BTC, worth around $396 million.

Bitcoin Mining Is Not a Complete Solution

While Bitcoin mining could help use some of India’s excess solar power, it is important to mention that it cannot solve the entire problem. The country still needs better storage systems and stronger grid infrastructure to manage the growing supply of energy. Bitcoin mining could only be an extra way to use some of the power that might go unused otherwise.

India’s Crypto Regulation Could Be Another Hurdle

While large-scale Bitcoin mining remains a possible solution for the surplus energy wastage, its practical implementation could be challenging. It depends on several factors, including regulation, taxation, and other rules. Even though Bitcoin mining is not banned in India, it could still face regulatory challenges as the government continues to take a cautious approach to crypto.
