How Does Chain Fusion Let Internet Computer Connect With Bitcoin?

Chain Fusion is the set of protocols that let smart contracts on the Internet Computer ($ICP) read, hold, and sign transactions on Bitcoin and other blockchains directly, without routing funds through a bridge or a wrapped token. Instead of trusting a third-party custodian to lock up Bitcoin and mint a copy somewhere else, $ICP nodes run their own Bitcoin adapter and use threshold cryptography to control real $BTC addresses. Per reports, bridges have been the single biggest source of losses in crypto history.

How Does Chain Fusion Actually Work?

Chain Fusion rests on two building blocks: connecting directly to a blockchain’s own network, and a signing trick called chain-key cryptography.

First, some quick vocabulary. On the Internet Computer, a canister is just the name for a smart contract, the small program that runs on the network and holds funds or logic. A node is one computer in the network; many nodes work together and check each other’s work.

For Bitcoin, $ICP uses “direct integration.” A group of $ICP nodes runs special software, called a Bitcoin adapter, that connects straight into Bitcoin’s own network and downloads its data, the same way any Bitcoin software would. Together, these nodes act like a real Bitcoin node, so a canister can check any Bitcoin address’s balance and send Bitcoin transactions on its own, with nothing standing in between. No outside company, no go-between, no bridge.

The second piece is the clever part: how a canister, a piece of software with no body, gets to “hold” real Bitcoin. Each canister can generate the type of digital key that Bitcoin addresses are built from, then ask the network to sign a transaction using that key. But no single computer ever holds the actual private key on its own. Instead, a group of nodes work together to produce a valid signature as a team, similar to a bank vault that needs several managers to turn their keys together before it opens. No individual manager can open it alone, and the same protection applies here: no single node, and no hacker who breaks into just one node, can move the funds.

For blockchains that don’t have this kind of direct connection built yet, $ICP uses a second, simpler method.

How Does $ICP Connect To Ethereum And Solana?

For those chains, canisters send a normal web request (the same kind your browser sends to load a page) to outside companies that run Ethereum or Solana servers. To avoid trusting any single company, $ICP sends the same request to at least three different companies at once and compares the answers. If they all agree, the result is accepted. If they don’t match, the canister has to sort out the disagreement rather than blindly trusting one source.

This is a real trade-off worth stating. With Bitcoin’s direct connection, the only thing you have to trust is that most of the $ICP nodes involved are honest. With the Ethereum and Solana method, you also have to trust that the outside server companies aren’t lying, even though checking three of them against each other makes that much harder to fake. Bitcoin gets the stronger guarantee. Ethereum and Solana get a slightly weaker one, made safer by requiring several outside sources to agree.

What Is ckBTC, And Why No Bridge Is Needed?

The clearest everyday example of Chain Fusion is a token called ckBTC, short for “chain-key Bitcoin.” Think of it as a stand-in for real Bitcoin that lives on the Internet Computer instead of the Bitcoin network, so it can move faster and cheaper. It’s backed 1:1 by real Bitcoin, and unlike similar products elsewhere, no central company sits in the middle handling the swap between $BTC and ckBTC.

Here’s how that’s different from the typical “wrapped Bitcoin” you may have seen on other blockchains:

  • A wrapped Bitcoin token usually works by having a company or a small group hold real $BTC in a vault, then hand out an IOU token elsewhere. If that company gets hacked or acts dishonestly, the IOU can become worthless even though it claims to be “backed.”
  • ckBTC skips that setup entirely. The Internet Computer connects straight into the Bitcoin network itself, so there’s no company and no vault for a hacker to target.
  • The exchange rate never moves. One ckBTC is always worth exactly one real Bitcoin, and you can trade one for the other whenever you like.

The speed and cost difference is significant. A ckBTC payment settles in a couple of seconds and costs a tiny fraction of a cent, while a normal Bitcoin payment often takes about an hour to fully confirm and comes with a real transaction fee.

The one time you do have to wait is your very first conversion: turning real $BTC into ckBTC still means sending an actual Bitcoin transaction, so that first step takes roughly an hour and costs Bitcoin’s normal network fee. After that, every ckBTC transfer is nearly instant.

Where Is This Being Used Right Now?

Chain Fusion’s Bitcoin connection isn’t just a technical demo. It’s already running inside real products, across a few categories:

  • Lending, borrowing, and staking with Bitcoin. Some apps now let people put their Bitcoin to work directly, without first sending it to a centralized exchange. One example lets people borrow against their Bitcoin or stake it to earn a return, with the return depending on how long they agree to lock it up.
  • Moving Bitcoin between different blockchain ecosystems. DFINITY, the organization behind the Internet Computer, has partnered with other networks to extend ckBTC onto their platforms, using Chain Fusion so those transfers still avoid a bridge.
  • Direct trading on exchanges. ckBTC has been listed on centralized exchanges as its own asset, which shows it’s treated as genuine, redeemable Bitcoin rather than a copycat token.

Where Does $ICP Stand In Mid-2026?

As of August 10, 2026, $ICP was trading at $2.19, up 2% over the prior 24 hours and up 7% over the past seven days, according to CoinMarketCap. That recovery follows a rough patch: $ICP touched a new all-time low near $2.00 on August 1, 2026, before rebounding. Current market cap sits around $1.21 billion on a circulating supply of roughly 560 million $ICP, with no fixed maximum supply.

Network usage tells a more specific story than price. In July 2026, $ICP processed 3.16 billion transactions, ranking it the world’s second-most-active blockchain behind Solana, according to data reported by BSCN and CoinMarketCap.

At the same time, its roughly $1.15 billion market cap runs about 91 times its total value locked of approximately $12.6 million on DeFiLlama, a gap analysts point to as a sign that heavy transaction throughput hasn’t yet translated into comparable DeFi capital.

On tokenomics, the Network Nervous System approved an upgrade called Mission 70 in January 2026, aimed at cutting annual $ICP inflation from around 9.7% down to a target range of 2.9% to 5.4% by the end of 2026. It does this by capping staking rewards and accelerating the burn of cycles, the unit $ICP converts into to pay for computation on the network.

What Are The Risks Of Chain Fusion And ckBTC?

Chain Fusion removes the risk that comes from bridges, but that doesn’t mean there’s zero risk left. The system still depends on most of the computers in a given group being honest, and the “many managers share one key” signing trick, while well studied by cryptographers, is complex enough that outside checks matter.

Independent security researchers, including a group that goes by Bitcoin Layers, have published reviews of how ckBTC is built, specifically because the technology is new enough to deserve a second opinion rather than just taking the project’s word for it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does ckBTC need a bridge to work? No. ckBTC is minted and redeemed through canister smart contracts that hold real Bitcoin directly, using chain-key signatures rather than a bridge contract or custodian.

Can Chain Fusion connect $ICP to chains other than Bitcoin? Yes. Bitcoin uses direct node-level integration, while Ethereum, Solana, and other chains connect through HTTPS outcalls to RPC providers, with results cross-checked across multiple independent providers before a canister accepts them.

Is ckBTC the same value as Bitcoin? Yes. One ckBTC is always redeemable for one $BTC. The token tracks Bitcoin’s value exactly; what changes is speed and cost, since ckBTC settles in one to two seconds with fees around 10 satoshis.

Conclusion

Chain Fusion gives $ICP canisters the ability to hold Bitcoin addresses, read the UTXO set, and sign valid $BTC transactions directly, using threshold cryptography instead of a bridge or custodian. ckBTC turns that capability into a usable, 1:1 redeemable token with sub-second settlement and near-zero fees. Ethereum and Solana connectivity runs through a separate RPC-based path with its own trust model. Together, these pieces let Bitcoin be used inside DeFi, lending, and staking applications while the underlying coins stay verifiably backed on the Bitcoin network itself.
