BeInCrypto spoke with experts from Metya and Social Discovery Group (SDG) to understand the development of immersive digital environments and how they drive the future of online relationships.
Loneliness in the Digital Age
Scientific studies have proven that strong social connections can lead to a longer life span, better health, and improved well-being.
Despite this, a Statista survey revealed that 33% of adults worldwide experience feelings of loneliness. Another study showed that adults between 18 and 24 were the most impacted age group.

In the dating field, while applications like Tinder and Hinge continue to dominate the market, other Web3-based projects are defying their dominance by incorporating newer technologies that forge more meaningful connections between people.
The Expanding Role of Virtual Intimacy
Over the years, the Web3 ecosystem has begun to see the emergence of various initiatives aimed at addressing problems of loneliness, isolation, and disconnection. These projects use artificial intelligence (AI) and virtual reality (VR) to create digital experiences that foster meaningful communication and connection.
These initiatives were not created in a vacuum. Rather, they were designed in response to a growing demand for virtual relationships.
“For over 20 years, we have been at the forefront of social discovery. We see a significant shift in how people connect and build meaningful relationships online. Through extensive research, we have identified a growing trend for virtual intimacy — emotional closeness, connection, and bonds that users can develop and share through digital platforms,” said Alex Kudos, CEO of SDG’s Venture Studio.
Kudos argues that this increased demand also reflects changes in incentives for romantic relationships over time. Historically, romantic relationships were primarily formed for resource sharing and procreation.
According to a 2019 study conducted by Pew Research in the US, that tendency has become inverted today. While 66% of surveyed adults reported getting married for companionship, only 38% stated that their motives were financial.
“With continued globalization, there is a growing trend of online-only relationships that go beyond geographic and cultural barriers. We found that 71% of people feel messaging with connections—and never meeting them—still gives them a sense of companionship and decreased feelings of loneliness. The growing demand for virtual companionship and community-building is prompting communication apps to innovate with features that prioritize intimacy and connection, personalization, and seamless interaction,” Kudos told BeInCrypto.
Given this reality, industry players have started incorporating blockchain capabilities and Web3 technologies into dating-oriented projects to satiate this growing market demand.
Enhancing Trust with Blockchain
One of the most notable issues with online dating is catfishing. This phenomenon refers to creating user profiles with fake identities for fraudulent reasons. To combat this, Web3 builders have incorporated blockchain technology to enhance profile verification.
“Blockchain applications in the dating space go beyond the technology itself, reshaping trust mechanisms and privacy protection. On traditional dating platforms, users often worry about data breaches or fake identities, but blockchain provides a truly transparent and secure environment through decentralization and immutable technology,” said Christian Tarala, Chief Marketing Officer and Co-Founder of Metya.
This technology can also offer other benefits, such as decentralizing data storage without compromising user information and eliminating intermediaries.
“Through on-chain traceability, users can verify each other’s identity and the authenticity of interactions, preventing common fraudulent activities,” Tarala added.
Project developers are also using other emerging tools to enhance the online experience.
Enhancing the Algorithm with AI
Kudos and Tarala agree that traditional dating apps focus excessively on the value users give to a candidate’s physical appearance. This overreliance detracts from the important role that emotional connection plays in long-lasting relationships.
“Traditional swipe-based systems simplify matching to visual aesthetics and one-way selection, overlooking emotional resonance and deeper interest connections,” Tarala told BeInCrypto.
Social Discovery Group and Metya are just two of many projects that incorporate AI-powered systems into their projects. These machines forge high-quality matches by generating advanced algorithms based on historical behavior and preferences.
“AI-driven features deeply analyze user data using multiple criteria, resulting in a more personalized feed highly customized matches, and a higher success rate of making a real connection,” Kudos said.
AI is also contributing to other innovations in the dating space.
The Emergence of AI Companions
AI agents have captured mainstream attention for their ability to make decisions and carry out tasks autonomously. Some experts even predict that these agents will soon develop emotional capabilities that are currently unique to humans.
Project builders dedicated to online dating have developed a similar solution that addresses loneliness: AI companions.
“AI companions can give users personalized emotional advice without the element of judgment that many often feel when they express themselves to loved ones. Also, some users can develop their communication skills by practicing with AI companions,” Kudos explained.
To that point, Tarala added that AI companions are also great from a psychological perspective, given that these relationships can provide comfort and stability for individuals whose emotional needs are unmet. However, he cautioned that these companions are not intended to replace human connection and that project developers must establish ethical user guidelines.
“AI companions come with potential risks. Users may become dependent on AI, reducing their motivation to engage in real-world social interactions. Furthermore, while AI interactions can be highly human-like, they still lack the depth and spontaneity of human relationships. Metya views AI companions as a tool for enhancing “augmented reality relationships” rather than a replacement for human connections, ensuring that the technology is used in ways that support long-term mental health,” Tarala told BeInCrypto.
Safeguards against unhealthy dependence on these technologies will ensure the long-term success of these applications.
Getting Married in the Metaverse
The use of VR in metaverse environments represents another way emerging technologies transform traditional understandings of intimacy.
“The introduction of VR technology allows users to create shared experiences in virtual spaces, such as attending a virtual concert or exploring a digital art gallery together. The real disruption of Web3 is that socializing is no longer limited to “communication”; it becomes an “experience,” offering users emotional connections beyond physical distance,” Tarala explained.
For example, users of Social Discovery Group’s dating platform have access to LOMB, a meta-dating space developed by the company.
“Three couples from the platform got married there virtually and received NFT matrimony certificates,” Kudos said.
For Tarala, the metaverse serves as a testing ground for the future of relationships. As technology advances, online relationships evolve from text and image interactions into immersive, real-time experiences.
“This immersive digital environment not only expands the dimensions of social interaction but also allows users to freely explore and express emotions in a secure space. Metya believes that in the metaverse, the essence of relationships will no longer be limited to the physical world, but will redefine the possibilities of human connection,” he said.
Considering this, the future of dating on Web3 seems bright.

While still in its nascent stages, virtual dating will continue to evolve with technological advancements.
“The industry is quickly developing. We anticipate that the future of online relationships is a world where people can connect and be virtually intimate in a way that is just as fulfilling as a physical relationship,” Kudos told BeInCrypto.
Tarala concurs, predicting that AI-driven matching will soon replace traditional swipe-based dating. He also anticipates that blockchain-based apps will appeal to privacy-conscious users and that metaverse-based relationships will become increasingly common.
“In the next 5-10 years, Web3 dating and social technologies are set to enter the mainstream market. AI will become smarter, VR will offer deeper immersion, and blockchain will serve as the foundation for trust,” he said.
Ultimately, these advancements in virtual dating seek to fulfill a fundamental human need for connection, offering new avenues for intimacy and companionship in a world grappling with loneliness in the digital age.
