“DeFi has made capital programmable. Its protection should be programmable too,” Jesus Rodriguez, Firelight co-founder and Sentora’s chief technology and product officer, said in a post on X. “We have spent years measuring total value locked. It’s time to pay attention to total value covered.”
Firelight said on X that initial cover went to Sentora’s USD Protected Vault and Protected RWA Vaults. Sentora curates about $2.59 billion in vault deposits, according to its own dashboard.
The company raised $8 million in a seed round led by Gumi Cryptos Capital, The Defiant reported in September.
Thirty-Day Cover Tokens
Cover runs in fixed 30-day periods. A vault operator picks approved markets, requests a quote and pays the premium upfront, and the protocol issues an ERC-721 Cover Token recording the covered markets, the coverage amount, the premium, the rate and the period, the documentation says.
End users do not pay Firelight. The operator pays, holds the token, receives any payout and passes it to depositors under the vault’s own terms. Cover does not float between markets mid-period, and positions that move into an undeclared market are uncovered until the next renewal.
Enabling cover is permissioned. Operators clear institutional onboarding, including anti-money laundering and sanctions screening, before they can request a quote. Staking is open to anyone.
Three of Five
There is no claims-filing step. An independent security partner publishes an exploit report onchain, with a target of 48 hours from incident confirmation, and the protocol automatically pulls in every active Cover Token exposed to the incident.
The Risk Consortium — Hypernative, Cyfrin, Credora, GFX Labs and Native — then validates the incident against the published coverage terms, declares conflicts and votes to approve or deny. A three-of-five quorum triggers the payout. Onchain cover has turned on these decisions before: Nexus Mutual members spent weeks weighing a payout after the 2021 BadgerDAO hack.
Losses run through a two-step waterfall. A protocol-owned stablecoin First-Loss Buffer draws down first. Anything left is met by slashing the staker vault pro rata, with the slashed FXRP converted to stablecoins by a liquidation service. All staked capital is slashable, and deployments pause when an incident opens so that capital arriving afterward does not absorb the loss.
What The Policy Excludes
Cover extends to smart contract exploits, oracle failures and manipulation, governance exploits, bad debt from mechanism failure, depegs caused by a broken redemption or stabilization mechanism, and redemption failures.
Excluded are normal market volatility, MEV, structural design flaws including undisclosed architectural weaknesses, rug pulls and insider theft, user error, frontend and phishing attacks, regulatory seizure, risks disclosed at inception, depegs where redemption works as designed, legitimate governance outcomes and force majeure.
Economic-risk cover carries a duty to mitigate. An operator who becomes aware of a likely covered economic incident must take reasonable steps to limit losses, and payouts can be cut to the extent losses could have been avoided. Economic cover is also subject to sublimits; technical cover is written to the full scheduled limit.
Capital In $XRP, Claims In Dollars
The collateral is a volatile asset and the payouts are stablecoins, a mismatch Firelight’s capital adequacy framework addresses directly. The protocol stress-tests its ratio against collateral drawdowns: a 40% to 55% fall pushes it into a band where new cover is paused, and past 55% renewals are restricted as well. The matching engine will not allocate capacity that takes the ratio below 1.2.
Firelight says that during drawdowns it can raise base-rate emissions to pull in capital rather than cut cover already written.
Terms Still To Come
Firelight’s announcement did not give the amount of cover written on the Sentora vaults or the premium paid. The documentation says per-market capacity and base premium rates are published to an onchain Cover Registry and refreshed every 30 days.
The full cover terms, which Firelight describes as the authoritative source for definitions and the complete exclusions list, are to be published to IPFS. The docs say the link “will be published here closer to launch.”
The Phase 1 vault contracts were audited by OpenZeppelin and Coinspect and went through an Immunefi audit competition. For the coverage protocol that went live Tuesday, Firelight’s audits page lists “Audits coming soon.”
Staker terms are set by Firelight Networks (BVI) Ltd. under British Virgin Islands law, with disputes going to arbitration in the territory. Firelight’s liability on a cover claim is capped at the advance amount provided.
$XRP rose 1.4% over 24 hours and Flare’s FLR gained 0.9%, against a 1.3% move in Bitcoin, CoinGecko data shows. Neither token moved on the launch.
