Filecoin uses Proof of Data Possession (PDP), a check where a provider proves it still holds your data. Providers must prove at least daily that they still store your data, and payments halt automatically if proofs stop.
Which Is Cheaper, Filecoin Or Google Drive?
Raw storage prices are close. The difference is in how you pay.
Google Drive Pricing
Google Drive is free for the first 15 GB. The 2 TB plan, now called Google AI Plus, costs $9.99 a month or about $99.99 a year. Filled completely, that is about $4.17 per TB per month.
Filecoin Pricing
Filecoin’s warm storage costs $2.50 per TiB per month per copy, plus $0.024 per data set each month. Two copies are the default. A TiB, or tebibyte, is 1,024 GiB, about 10% larger than a standard terabyte. Filecoin’s own tools put the two-copy cost at $4.55 per TB per month.
For businesses, Fil One charges $4.99 per TB-month with no egress or API request charges and a $4.99 monthly minimum. Egress means fees for downloading your own data. Fil One became generally available on October 15.

Which Keeps Your Files More Private?
Google Drive encrypts files by default. Filecoin leaves that job to you.
Google protects stored files with AES-256 encryption but holds the encryption keys in this default model. Client-side encryption, which Google servers cannot decrypt, is limited to Frontline Plus, Enterprise Plus, Education Standard and Education Plus editions. Personal accounts do not get it.
Filecoin does not provide built-in encryption, so users must encrypt data before uploading. A Filecoin builder guide warns that unencrypted files can be read by the storage provider and copied to unknown third parties. Files are located by a content identifier (CID), a fingerprint of the file, and one Filecoin-based service notes that uploads are available to anyone with the correct CID.

Neither service stores files forever by default.
Google Drive’s Inactivity Rules
Google may delete an inactive Google Account and its data after at least two years of inactivity. Separately, if you’re over your storage limit for two years, Google may delete content across Gmail, Drive and Photos.
Filecoin’s Pay To Keep Model
Filecoin storage lasts as long as your agreement is funded. Fil One reports 11 nines of durability, meaning 99.999999999% expected data survival, with objects re-checked about every 24 hours.
Deletion works differently too. One Filecoin-based service advises against storing data that may need to be permanently deleted later.
What Changed On Filecoin In October 2026?
Two changes reshaped Filecoin’s tokenomics this month, and both aim to tie the network more closely to paying storage customers like the ones described above.
- Solstice: The upgrade ended Fil+ DataCap subsidies and shifted incentives toward paid storage. Any unearned part of the services share is burned.
- Vesting end: Vesting for Protocol Labs and the Filecoin Foundation ended on October 15. This removes roughly 66.7 to 68 million $FIL of new supply each year, which works out to a cut in annual $FIL issuance of about 75%.
Neither change guarantees results. The 75% figure is a projection. Some analysts note it is a model-based estimate, not a measured post-vesting result. Solstice changes incentives, but it cannot create demand by itself. Filecoin’s own October 19 post says the upgrade does not guarantee customers, so the outcome depends on paying users actually arriving.
Which Should You Choose?
The right choice depends on what you store and who needs access.
- Google Drive suits personal files, shared documents and simple setup with built-in encryption
- Filecoin suits large datasets, app storage or archives where verifiable proof of storage matters, with files encrypted first
- Both work together if you want a second copy outside one company’s control
