Fairshake affiliate spends $189K as Auchincloss wins

Fairshake affiliate Protect Progress spent $189,527.60 supporting Representative Jake Auchincloss before he defeated Democratic challenger Jason Poulos in Massachusetts’ Fourth Congressional District primary on Sept. 1.

Unofficial results showed Auchincloss winning 72.3% of the vote, compared with 27.7% for Poulos. The victory moved the incumbent closer to securing a fourth House term as the crypto industry increases its involvement in the 2026 U.S. elections.

A Protect Progress filing disclosed media spending supporting Auchincloss. Independent expenditure groups can advocate for or against candidates but cannot coordinate that spending with their campaigns.

Poulos criticized the intervention, alleging that some of the money funded “AI-generated slop mailers.” Neither the FEC disclosure nor Poulos’ materials established that Auchincloss or his campaign helped produce the advertisements.

Fairshake affiliate enters Massachusetts House race

Protect Progress is the Democratic-facing affiliate of Fairshake, a super PAC supported by major crypto companies and investors. Fairshake also works with Defend American Jobs, which primarily backs Republicans.

The network uses independent advertising to support candidates it considers favorable to digital asset policy. Its Massachusetts expenditure was smaller than spending in several earlier congressional contests, but no official Fairshake statement described the amount as a strategic reduction.

Fairshake and its affiliates had previously spent more than $8 million across congressional primaries in Maryland, New York and Utah. Protect Progress directed much of that money toward Democratic candidates, including Adrian Boafo and Ritchie Torres, amid growing scrutiny of outside political spending.

The network also supported candidates in Michigan and Washington during August. Those results extended its 2026 record after Fairshake entered the election cycle with a reported $193 million war chest and added victories in both states.

Protect Progress’ Massachusetts spending did not go directly to Auchincloss or his campaign. FEC rules treat such spending separately from candidate contributions because the organization decides how to use the money without campaign coordination.

Poulos links the spending to Auchincloss’ crypto record

Poulos sent Auchincloss an Aug. 16 letter asking him to “publicly renounce” Protect Progress’ activity. The challenger updated the letter on Aug. 28 after the PAC disclosed additional expenditures.

The letter said Protect Progress spent $189,527.60 across four mailers supporting Auchincloss. Poulos alleged the material relied on artificial intelligence and criticized the PAC for entering a Democratic primary without discussing cryptocurrency in the advertisements.

Poulos also claimed Auchincloss had received $77,500 from crypto industry sources since 2020. That figure came from the challenger’s campaign analysis and was not the amount disclosed in Protect Progress’ independent expenditure notice.

The incumbent’s voting record provides the clearest connection to the industry’s policy agenda. Auchincloss voted for the Digital Asset Market Clarity Act when the House approved the legislation in July 2025.

The bill would establish a federal market structure for digital assets and divide responsibilities between the Securities and Exchange Commission and Commodity Futures Trading Commission. It remains pending in the Senate and has not become law.

Stand With Crypto separately endorsed 32 House lawmakers who voted for the legislation. The Coinbase-backed organization is using congressional voting records to support its campaign for returning CLARITY Act supporters, showing how the House vote has become a central test for the industry’s election activity.

Auchincloss wins after outside spending controversy

Reported unofficial results showed Auchincloss receiving 36,367 votes, or 72.3%, while Poulos received 13,938 votes, or 27.7%.

The margin shows Auchincloss won comfortably, but the result does not establish how many voters were influenced by Protect Progress. Campaign advertisements are only one factor in an election involving an incumbent with established name recognition and fundraising advantages.

Poulos’ criticism also raised a broader issue for Fairshake’s strategy. The PAC network frequently funds advertisements that present candidates through subjects unrelated to cryptocurrency. This allows it to reach voters who may not rank digital asset regulation among their main concerns.

Fairshake has defended its model as a way to elect lawmakers who favor clearer rules for blockchain companies. Critics argue that advertisements should be more transparent about the industry interests financing them. Both positions represent political arguments rather than findings by election regulators.

No FEC allegation included in the cited records accused Protect Progress of coordinating with Auchincloss or violating campaign finance law. Poulos asked the incumbent to reject the support, but candidates cannot directly control lawful independent spending conducted by outside groups.

Crypto PAC money shifts toward November elections

The Massachusetts primary was among the final state contests before the Nov. 3 general election. Fairshake said in August that its network had $122 million available for the fall campaign after recording wins in dozens of House and Senate races.

The amount differs from Fairshake’s individual committee balance because reported network totals can include affiliated groups. The FEC’s Fairshake summary showed the main committee holding approximately $113 million on July 31, with no debts owed by the committee.

The network’s remaining funds give it the capacity to enter competitive races during the final campaign months. Its 2024 activity demonstrated that spending can expand sharply once groups identify contests where advertising may influence congressional control.

The political stakes extend beyond individual candidates. Control of Congress will affect the prospects for the CLARITY Act and other digital asset proposals. The House passed the market structure bill in 2025, but Senate negotiations have continued over the division of regulatory authority and treatment of decentralized finance.

Auchincloss will advance to the November ballot after his primary victory. Protect Progress has not announced additional spending in his general election contest, while Fairshake has said it will continue supporting candidates across House and Senate races.
