Evernorth COO: Japan’s $XRP ‘Chicken-and-Egg’ Dilemma Could End as Tokenization Accelerates
Japanese financial institutions remain optimistic about $XRP‘s long-term potential, but adoption continues to be held back by what Evernorth Chief Operating Officer Meg Nakamura describes as a classic chicken-and-egg dilemma.
Speaking at WebX Asia 2026 in Tokyo, Nakamura said many banks and financial firms recognize the value of blockchain-powered finance, yet few are prepared to be the first to make significant investments without seeing broader institutional participation.
According to Nakamura, the hesitation stems from a self-reinforcing cycle: institutions want proof that their peers have embraced $XRP before committing capital, while widespread adoption cannot occur until more players take that initial leap. As a result, many firms remain in a wait-and-see mode, closely monitoring the market instead of leading it.
She noted that this cautious stance aligns with Japan’s financial culture, where regulatory compliance, operational resilience, and long-term risk management often outweigh the desire to be first movers.
Rather than rushing into blockchain adoption, institutions are prioritizing pilot programs, strategic collaborations, and limited deployments to validate the technology before expanding its use.
Although $XRP remains central to these discussions, Nakamura believes the industry’s attention is shifting beyond digital payments. While stablecoins have dominated recent conversations by improving payment efficiency and cross-border settlement, she argued that tokenization is poised to become blockchain’s defining use case.
Unlike stablecoins, which primarily facilitate value transfer, tokenization enables real-world assets, including government bonds, equities, real estate, private credit, commodities, and investment funds, to exist as digital assets on blockchain networks.
This has the potential to streamline settlement, reduce operational costs, unlock liquidity, enable fractional ownership, and make previously inaccessible assets available to a broader pool of investors.

For financial institutions, tokenization is increasingly seen as the next evolution of capital markets rather than simply another cryptocurrency application. As adoption grows, blockchain infrastructure such as the $XRP Ledger is expected to play an increasingly important role in issuing, transferring, and settling tokenized assets at institutional scale.
Nakamura also emphasized that regulatory clarity is becoming a catalyst, not a constraint, for innovation. Clear legal frameworks give financial institutions the confidence to develop blockchain-based products while meeting compliance requirements, significantly lowering barriers to adoption.
Japan is particularly well positioned to capitalize on this shift, having established one of the world’s most comprehensive digital asset regulatory environments.
As regulations continue to mature and tokenization gains traction, Nakamura believes today’s hesitation toward $XRP could gradually fade, paving the way for broader institutional adoption and a new phase of blockchain-driven financial innovation.
