Mount Carmel has become the latest U.S. community to push back against energy-intensive digital infrastructure, with the town’s Board of Mayor and Aldermen voting on July 23 to ban cryptocurrency mining operations and data centers.
The decision comes as residents in communities across the country increasingly oppose large-scale data centers, citing concerns over electricity demand, noise, water usage, environmental impact, and the effect on rural neighborhoods.
The move follows opposition to data center development in nearby Mt. Carmel Township, Pennsylvania, where hundreds of residents attended public meetings to voice concerns over proposed facilities. Residents argued that large data centers could threaten nearby homes, forests, and community character, while calling for stricter zoning rules, larger buffer zones, and tougher penalties for violations.
Critics in Mt. Carmel Township also raised concerns that proposed fines for violating data center regulations were too small compared with the financial resources of major operators, arguing that penalties should be significantly higher. Some residents pushed officials to introduce a temporary moratorium while local rules were reviewed.
Mount Carmel’s decision reflects a broader wave of municipal resistance toward crypto mining and data centers. In recent months, several U.S. towns have introduced restrictions on similar facilities.

In New York, the Town of Manlius approved a one-year moratorium on data centers and commercial cryptocurrency mining, citing concerns about power demand, water consumption, environmental impacts, and rising utility costs.
Morgan County, Alabama, also approved a temporary halt on data center and crypto mining projects after residents opposed a proposed Bitcoin mining facility, raising concerns about noise, infrastructure strain, road impacts, and the industrialization of residential areas.
Meanwhile, St. Joseph, Tennessee, passed an ordinance banning data centers, artificial intelligence computing facilities, cryptocurrency mining operations, and similar high-intensity digital infrastructure within city limits.
The opposition is not limited to crypto mining. The rapid expansion of AI-driven data centers has fueled a wider national debate over whether local communities should host massive computing facilities that require significant electricity and water resources. Cities including New Orleans and others have moved toward tighter restrictions or moratoriums amid similar concerns.
For the crypto industry, the growing resistance presents another challenge as Bitcoin mining companies increasingly seek locations with cheap power and available land. While operators argue they bring investment, tax revenue, and economic activity, critics say communities often bear the costs through higher infrastructure demands and environmental pressures.
