Base Cuts Block Time to 200 Milliseconds
Base, the Coinbase-incubated Layer-2 network, is preparing to cut its official block interval from two seconds to 200 milliseconds under the Denim upgrade, with mainnet activation targeted for November 2026. The upgrade is already live on the Base Sepolia testnet, where the network’s official status page records it as applied since October 21. Upgrade documentation lists mainnet status as planned, with no fixed activation date. Today Base produces one official block every two seconds, 43,200 per day. Under Denim, output moves to one block every 200 milliseconds, five per second, lifting daily production to 432,000. The jump is a change in block count, not a guaranteed tenfold rise in transaction throughput, and the effect on fees and user costs cannot be derived from the interval alone. Base has long supplied preconfirmations through Flashblocks, preliminary signals issued roughly every 200 milliseconds before an official block lands. Denim changes that arrangement: rather than shortening the preconfirmation cycle, it creates numbered, recorded blocks at the same cadence, so applications must distinguish fast preliminary signals from blocks written to the chain. The upgrade documentation sets out operator impact in detail. Apps that subscribe to Flashblock data or query pending transaction state should re-examine their RPC integration, the channel through which applications request data from blockchain nodes. Smart contracts that use block numbers as a time reference are exposed as well: if ten times as many blocks appear in the same period, waiting periods and voting windows defined in blocks run shorter in real time. Indexers and analytics services that collect per-block data need to review notification volume and RPC request load. Base’s earlier 200-millisecond sub-block work under Optimism stopped at faster preconfirmations; Denim goes further by making each 200-millisecond slot a real block.
Zcash Grants Proposal Divides Developers
Sean Bowe, a founding engineer of Zcash, the privacy-focused altcoin, has proposed ending the automatic funding of the Zcash Community Grants (ZCG) program and redirecting its 8 percent share of the Zcash block subsidy to the Network Sustainability Mechanism (NSM), which defers value toward future block rewards. In a post on X he wrote that “the time has come to close ZCG’s funding flow,” that the program was not built to manage a treasury of this size, and that millions of dollars more will accrue until any change takes effect. The current model directs 8 percent of the subsidy to community grants and 12 percent to a fund controlled by $ZEC holders; Bowe targets only the automatic ZCG payments, while the program keeps authority over its existing assets and can keep backing new projects from its treasury. Treasury figures in the draft list about 91,453 $ZEC, $8.8 million in dollar assets and $2.4 million in grant obligations. At an assumed $ZEC price of $1,300, resources left after obligations reach roughly $125.3 million, falling to $97.8 million at $1,000 and $52.1 million at $500. The draft notes the headline total is mostly $ZEC rather than cash, and that the figures have not been independently reconciled. The inflow is the crux of Bowe’s case: the 8 percent share yields about 144 $ZEC per day, roughly 52,560 $ZEC a year, close to $68.3 million annually at a $1,300 price, while the Financial Privacy Foundation’s first-quarter report put ZCG spending near $1.53 million, an annualized pace of about $6.12 million. Under the plan the share would be recorded to the NSM balance instead of sent to grant addresses, then re-issued gradually through future block rewards; the transfer is not a permanent burn, and Zcash’s 21 million supply cap and halving schedule stay intact. Counterproposals followed: Maxime Desalle’s separate forum draft would halt new grants and sweep the remaining treasury into the NSM after obligations are paid, developer Jack Grigg, posting as str4d, called development and maintenance as much a part of network security as mining, and Josh Swihart said any change should also address the 12 percent coinholder fund. The draft sets no activation block height, sits outside the current NU7 upgrade, and requires a future network upgrade, covering the funding period that runs to the third halving in 2028.
