Experts Warn Missing Records Could Trigger Tax Notices

As there are only two days left until the ITR submission deadline in India, experts are reminding crypto investors to focus on more than simply filing taxes. According to crypto tax experts, filing income tax returns is just one aspect of compliance with Indian laws. Apart from this, crypto investors must maintain accurate transaction records, as proper documentation can help avoid future crypto tax notices.

The latest reports on Indian crypto tax rules focus on the importance of complete records of every digital asset transaction. If investors do not maintain proper documentation, they may not be able to explain how their tax calculations were made if they receive a notice later.

Why Records Matter for Crypto Tax Compliance in India?

Reportedly, experts are highlighting the need to maintain a complete record of every crypto transaction. They argue that these documents will be required if the Income Tax Department seeks clarification in the future. If investors face such notices, the lack of records may make it difficult to explain their gains, losses, or crypto tax liabilities.

“Tax disputes often arise not because an investor fails to report a transaction, but because the figures in the return cannot be reconstructed several years later,” stated Vikram Subburaj, CEO of Giottus.com. According to him, record-keeping is especially important due to the evolution of trading in India.

Now, Indian crypto traders are trading across multiple platforms. They transfer assets between personal wallets, swap a token for another, earn staking rewards, and receive airdrops. While these activities spread across different areas, it is important to keep a record of all of them to create a clear audit trail.

Essential Crypto Tax Records Every Investor Should Keep

Vikram Subburaj asserts that investors should have detailed information about every crypto transaction. The details include the purchase and sale date, token name, quantity, acquisition cost, rupee value, and transaction fees. He also added that downloading exchange confirmations, annual account statements, bank records, and deposit or withdrawal receipts will also be beneficial in the future.

If the investor is using blockchain networks, they are also required to save wallet addresses and transaction hashes. If the owner moves assets between his different wallets, there should be details stored to prove that they were internal transfers rather than taxable sales. Subburaj stated, “Good documentation does not change the tax payable. It allows the investor to explain how it was calculated.”

Further, Subburaj cautioned investors to maintain regular backups of their records. This is mainly because there is no guarantee that any crypto exchange will operate permanently. Especially when crypto regulation in India continues to expand, there are chances for closures, regulatory restrictions, or account access limits. Thus, it will be better to keep offline copies of the transaction details, which make it accessible even when the platform is not available.

Another key focus is on the proof of the original purchase. According to India’s crypto tax rules, the cost of acquisition is the deduction allowed while calculating taxable gains. So, traders must ensure that the original purchase details remain linked to those assets to support future tax calculations. In addition to this, traders must also keep separate records of crypto-to-crypto sales, staking rewards, airdrops, and other crypto-related transactions.

While Subburaj repeatedly mentioned future crypto tax notices, the Indian crypto community may become nervous. But according to Mudrex Head of Business Prateek Gupta, “Receiving a crypto tax notice doesn’t necessarily mean you’ve done something wrong, but it does mean the Income Tax Department has found a mismatch between your tax return and the transaction data available through exchange-reported TDS, Form 26AS, or the Annual Information Statement (AIS).”
