Charles Schwab CEO Sees Crypto as a New Revenue Engine

“All clients can now access Schwab Crypto. We are rolling out the ability for clients to transfer their crypto holdings to Schwab, and we are launching access to three new coins by the end of the year.”

The announcement marks a substantial expansion for a traditional brokerage that manages approximately $13.33 trillion in client assets and maintains 40.3 million active brokerage accounts. Schwab first disclosed details of its cryptocurrency trading service in April, initially offering bitcoin (BTC) and ether (ETH) through a separate account operated by Charles Schwab Premier Bank, SSB.

Charles Schwab CEO Rick Wurster sees crypto’s potential.

The crypto firm Paxos handles trade execution and provides sub-custody services, while Schwab integrates cryptocurrency positions into its existing investment platforms. Eligible customers can purchase and sell the two cryptocurrencies through Schwab.com, the Schwab Mobile application, and thinkorswim, with their holdings displayed alongside stocks, bonds, and exchange-traded funds (ETFs).

The service carries a 0.75% trading fee, with transactions starting at $1 and reaching a maximum of $2 million per order. Trading operates nearly around the clock, apart from scheduled maintenance periods. For Schwab, the attraction extends beyond giving existing customers another investment choice. The company is positioning cryptocurrency trading as another service within an investment ecosystem already serving tens of millions of Americans.

Crypto Transfers Begin, but Schwab Keeps Tight Controls

One of the more consequential developments concerns cryptocurrency transfers, a feature absent when Schwab Crypto first entered the market. The brokerage has begun enabling deposits and withdrawals for selected clients, with broader availability arriving in stages. Customers receive an email when their accounts qualify and must complete additional identity verification and authentication requirements.

Transfers currently support bitcoin on the Bitcoin network and ether on the Ethereum network. However, Schwab isn’t throwing caution to the wind. Customers must register approved withdrawal addresses, and newly added addresses face a 24-hour waiting period before transfers can proceed. Withdrawals are restricted to three transactions per 24 hours, each limited to $5,000. Monthly deposits, by contrast, can reach $50 million.

Schwab does not impose additional transfer fees, although outgoing transactions remain subject to blockchain network charges. These restrictions illustrate the company’s approach to digital asset custody. Investors gain access to direct cryptocurrency ownership, but transfers operate within a banking-style compliance and security framework rather than the comparatively unrestricted environment associated with self-custody.

Solana, Avalanche, and Chainlink Join Expansion Plans

Schwab’s cryptocurrency ambitions extend beyond the industry’s two largest digital assets. The brokerage previously announced plans to introduce solana (SOL), avalanche (AVAX), and chainlink (LINK), with all three expected to become available before the end of 2026. Thursday’s webcast reinforced that timetable, placing the additional cryptocurrencies among several new trading products being introduced across the company’s platforms.

The expansion comes as Schwab already commands a substantial presence in cryptocurrency-linked investment products. Company executives have previously estimated that Schwab clients hold approximately 20% of all spot cryptocurrency exchange-traded products industrywide. That existing exposure provides an established audience for direct trading, although it doesn’t necessarily indicate how many customers will migrate from ETFs into direct cryptocurrency ownership.

The firm’s Oct. 7 Modern Wealth Survey offered another indication of investor appetite. Approximately six in 10 existing cryptocurrency investors surveyed said they intended to increase their holdings over the next 12 months. Still, Schwab has not disclosed detailed trading volumes, customer adoption figures, or cryptocurrency assets held through its new platform.

Wurster Sees Crypto as Another Way to Monetize Schwab’s Empire

Perhaps the most revealing commentary arrived during the question-and-answer portion of Thursday’s webcast. Devin Ryan, an analyst at Citizens, asked Wurster about the company’s efforts to capture more revenue from the enormous investment platform it operates. The Schwab chief explicitly identified crypto trading as one of those opportunities.

“We have actively found and will continue to find many ways to monetize our platform,” Wurster remarked. “And ETF monetization is certainly one, but there’s others we pursued and implemented and feel good about those. We’re also expanding into new areas that create additional transactional-based revenue streams that are beneficial to our clients.”

He added:

“Things like crypto, things like prediction markets. So I expect us to be able to monetize our clients’ trading behavior that they want to do that’s helpful to their financial lives.”

The remarks put a financial dimension on Schwab’s cryptocurrency expansion. Beyond accommodating customer demand, direct trading creates another source of transaction-based revenue for a brokerage traditionally associated with stocks, funds, wealth management, and banking services.

Wurster elaborated on the company’s broader approach to generating revenue from existing customer relationships, stating:

“I think there’s multiple ways for us to monetize, that we can monetize our product platforms better. So there’s lots of things we’re doing. We continue to grow wealth, we continue to grow lending to make sure we fully monetize our balance sheet capabilities, integrate a client’s financial life, [and] make those assets stickier.”

The strategy centers on attracting more customer assets while expanding the services available within a single financial institution.

Record Earnings Give Schwab’s Crypto Push Financial Muscle

The cryptocurrency expansion arrives alongside another record-setting quarter for the brokerage. Schwab reported $190.4 billion in core net new assets during the third quarter, representing 38% growth from the corresponding period last year. Net revenue reached $7.2 billion, a 17% annual increase, while adjusted earnings per share climbed 29% to $1.69. The company also opened 1.2 million new brokerage accounts during the quarter, bringing its total client account count to 48.6 million, including workplace and banking relationships.

Those figures demonstrate the scale behind Schwab’s entry into direct cryptocurrency trading, although the company has not broken out how much its crypto business contributed to the results. Important restrictions remain. Schwab Crypto is unavailable in New York, Louisiana, U.S. territories, and international markets. Cryptocurrency holdings are also not protected by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. or Securities Investor Protection Corp.

For cryptocurrency-native exchanges, Schwab’s expansion introduces another formidable competitor, one armed with decades of brokerage experience, established customer relationships and trillions of dollars in assets. The irony is difficult to miss. Bitcoin was created to enable value transfers without traditional financial intermediaries, yet one of America’s largest financial intermediaries is now building a business around helping customers own and trade it.
