The first custodian on board is Anchorage Digital Bank, the first federally chartered digital asset bank in the US. Anchorage is pairing CustodySync with its own Atlas Collateral Management product, which handles collateral for loans.
Under the hood, the setup leans on three Chainlink services: Proof of Reserve, Data Feeds, and the Chainlink Runtime Environment. Together, they keep custody records and lending protocols in agreement on balances, prices, and key moments in a loan’s life, such as deposits and liquidations.
Proof of Reserve does the transparency work. It publishes custody balances on-chain, so a lending protocol can confirm the collateral actually exists without taking possession of it.
The clever part is how collateral shows up on-chain. Instead of moving the underlying asset, the system issues a transfer-restricted receipt token that represents it.
When an institution borrows, funds move directly from the lending market to the borrower. The collateral stays put under the custodian’s control the entire time.
The gap CustodySync is aiming at
The numbers behind the launch explain the ambition. More than $80 billion is currently locked in DeFi lending markets.
Meanwhile, approximately $700 billion in digital assets sits with qualified custodians. That is a pool of capital several times larger than the entire DeFi lending sector, mostly sitting still.
Many institutions are required, or strongly expected, to hold client assets with a qualified custodian. Traditional DeFi lending asks borrowers to send collateral into a smart contract.
Anchorage CEO Nathan McCauley framed CustodySync as a way out of that bind. In his view, institutions should no longer have to pick between regulatory compliance through qualified custody and the liquidity available in on-chain markets.
Anchorage’s role and the oracle angle
Anchorage is a logical first partner. As a federally chartered bank, it brings exactly the kind of regulatory standing that conservative institutions look for before touching anything labeled DeFi.
Its Atlas Collateral Management product already manages loan collateral. CustodySync effectively extends that existing workflow to on-chain lending venues rather than forcing clients into a new system.
CustodySync uses Chainlink’s oracle capability for more than price data. It turns Chainlink into the bridge that keeps a bank’s records and a protocol’s records telling the same story, which matters a great deal when a liquidation is on the line.
What this means for institutions and DeFi
The most direct implication is a potential expansion of DeFi lending’s addressable market. If even a modest slice of that approximately $700 billion in custodied assets becomes usable as collateral, the effect on on-chain liquidity could be meaningful relative to the more than $80 billion currently in lending markets.
Chainlink and Anchorage did not disclose specific borrowing volumes or named borrowers at launch, so early adoption is the first thing worth tracking.
