Why the Market Keeps Rejecting the Ethereum Foundation’s Vision

Ethereum’s latest staking debate has renewed criticism of the network’s technical leadership. Some investors believe researchers prioritize decentralization without giving enough weight to market incentives. The dispute centers on a reward-burning proposal that opponents say could weaken $ETH demand, institutional interest, and DeFi activity.

On August 4, Ethereum developer Jérôme de Tychey announced the Tapered Issuance Burn proposal. The draft lists Pintail, Dapplion, Pa7x1, Ladislaus von Daniels, and Justin Drake as co-authors. The proposal remains under discussion and has not been selected for an Ethereum upgrade.

However, some investors believe researchers underestimate how returns, scarcity, borrowing demand, and confidence affect Ethereum in a competitive market.

How Would EIP-8363 Change Ethereum Staking Rewards?

Around 40 million $ETH is staked, equal to roughly one-third of the supply. The draft puts annual consensus issuance near 1.05 million $ETH and validator yield at 2.62%.

Individual returns decline as more validators join. However, the existing curve never switches off the incentive to stake and maintains an estimated yield floor of about 1.5%.

De Tychey said Ethereum crossed a one-third staking ratio in April 2026. According to his calculation, the entry queue can add about 1.75 million $ETH each month when operating at maximum capacity.

Under the authors’ projection, more than 70 million $ETH could be staked by Jan. 1, 2028. That would exceed 55% of supply if the entry queue remains full and few validators exit.

EIP-8363 would set a saturation balance of 60.25 million $ETH. The network would burn a rising portion of each validator’s idealized duty reward.

Net consensus yield would reach zero at the saturation point, or about half of supply. Priority fees and maximal extractable value would remain available.

The authors do not expect staking to reach a lasting 50% ratio. They argue that staking would settle below that threshold based on operating costs and the risk premium validators demand.

An immediate switch would reduce the current yield from about 2.6% to 1.2%. Therefore, the draft includes an 18-month transition that would introduce the permanent curve gradually.

Community Reacts to Ethereum Proposal

That supply argument drew strong resistance from Ethereum users, DeFi builders and investors. Critics questioned the effects on solo stakers, lending markets, institutional demand and network security.

Lawyer Gabriel Shapiro called the proposal a distraction from work that could instead increase demand for $ETH itself. MilliΞsupported lower issuance and argued that universal staking produces little yield because every holder receives the same dilution.

However, Aave founder Stani Kulechov said unpredictable staking income could discourage institutional buyers. He argued that institutions often prefer assets with clearer and more predictable cash flows.

Kulechov also warned that lower rewards would damage $ETH borrowing strategies. Leveraged stakers need staking returns to exceed their borrowing costs. Lower borrowing demand could then affect lenders and liquid staking markets.

Some investors may also move into stablecoins or competing tokens that offer clearer yields. Solo validators face a separate problem. Large providers can spread hardware, staff and compliance costs across thousands of positions.

Equal reductions may make home staking uneconomical before major custodians leave. Forum participants asked how the plan would avoid removing smaller operators first.

Ether.fi’s Mike Silagadze also opposed the proposal. He said lower rewards could hurt solo stakers and reduce activity across DeFi applications that rely on staking strategies.

Beyond this, DCinvestor argued that policies presented as healthy for $ETH overlook market effects. He said figures fail to treat markets as complex systems.

Did Ethereum’s Roadmap Affect $ETH?

The criticism reflects a difference in priorities. The Ethereum Foundation’s mandate places resilience above profit, organizational growth, or adoption at any cost. Its protocol unit also prioritizes censorship resistance, openness, privacy, and security over marketability or short-term interests.

Validators pay operating expenses in national currencies. The proposal also argues that Ethereum’s economic security depends partly on $ETH’s market value.

That dispute echoes criticism of Ethereum’s rollup-centered roadmap. The Dencun upgrade introduced cheaper blob space in March 2024 and sharply reduced the cost of posting layer-2 transaction data.

By May 2026, rollups processed about 95% of Ethereum transactions, according to Ethereum.org. Mainnet fees also fell as rollups stopped competing with ordinary execution activity for the same blockspace.

That outcome improved scalability and reduced user costs. Because EIP-1559 burns base fees, lower mainnet activity also reduced $ETH burning compared with heavily congested periods. However, this does not prove that Dencun caused $ETH’s price underperformance.

Other changes challenge the claim that protocol decisions have consistently damaged $ETH. The Merge cut annual token issuance by about 88.7%, while EIP-1559 linked network use to a direct supply burn.

Can Ethereum Balance Protocol Goals and Markets?

Citigroup cited negative ETF flows, weak investor appetite, stalled US crypto legislation, and capital rotation into artificial intelligence when it cut its Ether forecast in July 2026.

Ethereum’s underperformance could not be attributed solely to the Foundation or its technical roadmap. Critics argue that scaling choices weakened $ETH’s fee-capture narrative. However, negative ETF flows, regulation, and wider risk appetite also affected the market.

The debate returns attention to Ethereum’s off-chain governance, involving researchers, client teams, validators, node operators, developers, $ETH holders, and users. The Ethereum Foundation can fund research and coordinate development, but it cannot approve or impose an upgrade by itself

However, during the EIP-8363 discussion, critics called for broader reviews of solo-staker costs, DeFi liquidity, and institutional demand before the proposal advances. Research into solo-staker costs, DeFi liquidity, and institutional demand could reveal risks that technical models alone do not capture.
