Vitalik Buterin has published the last post in his series on indistinguishability obfuscation, this time looking at a method called local mixing.
The Ethereum co-founder describes how the method can alter the way a computer program is structured without changing what it does. Local mixing takes a different route from the techniques discussed in his earlier posts and uses ideas from symmetric cryptography.

Local Mixing Takes a Different Route
Unlike the approaches outlined in parts one and two, local mixing does not rely on elliptic curves, prime factorization or lattice-based cryptography. Instead, it uses basic logic circuits built from gates such as XOR, AND and NOT.

The method changes the structure of those circuits while preserving how they work. Reversible circuits allow researchers to replace gates with equivalent alternatives, while further mixing makes the resulting circuit harder to recognize.
Research Targets Future Cryptography
Generation mixing replaces sections of a circuit with randomly selected equivalents. Gadgetization adds structures designed to make the circuit harder to analyze by targeting specific mathematical properties.
The research remains experimental and relies heavily on random circuits. If successful, the approach could contribute to new forms of public-key encryption and other ways to hide how computer programs work.
Buterin’s earlier posts examined other approaches to iO, including diamond iO. The latest work adds local mixing as another developing path, with more research expected as the work progresses.
