In a recent conversation with Real Vision’s Raoul Pal, Digital Currency Group founder Barry Silbert shared his evolving perspective on the intersection of artificial intelligence and blockchain technology. Silbert identified decentralized AI as a significant emerging crypto theme, highlighting the Bittensor project specifically.
Barry Silbert, known for his early Bitcoin involvement, noted that his interest has recently turned toward artificial intelligence. He acknowledged that while the potential of AI took time to resonate with him, it has now become a primary area of focus.
During an appearance at SuperAI in Singapore, he explained his realization that AI is not only powerful but also increasingly relevant to the future of blockchain innovation.
“AI has become a clear theme,” Silbert said. “I began to look at where it intersects with crypto in a way that creates real value.”
Having backed numerous crypto projects with mixed success, Silbert maintains high standards, believing most tokens in the present lack real-world utility: “99.9% of tokens out there are worthless.”
Discovering Bittensor: AI Infrastructure, Not Just Payments
Silbert’s turning point regarding AI in crypto came in 2021 via Bittensor’s white paper. Unlike most AI-related crypto projects that focus on payments, Bittensor offers something different: decentralized infrastructure for building AI applications directly on the blockchain.
Silbert began a deep dive into the decentralized AI space and soon identified Bittensor as a project with serious potential. “This is the next big investment theme in crypto,” he said.
Decentralized AI: Crypto’s Next Evolutionary Step?
Silbert believes the crypto industry is entering a new phase. Following the rise of Bitcoin, Ethereum, NFTs, and DeFi, he views decentralized AI as the next wave of innovation.
“This is not just a payment mechanism for AI,” he said. “It’s about creating the infrastructure that AI can operate on top of, and that’s what makes it important.”
Bittensor Hits “Escape Velocity,” Leads the Pack
In the past year and a half, Silbert’s confidence in Bittensor has grown. He now says the project has reached “escape velocity,” a term he uses to describe a project that has gathered enough momentum to sustain its own growth.
Although several projects are exploring the AI-blockchain space, Silbert has singled out Bittensor as a leader. Its technical design and long-term vision set it apart from many recent entries in the market. “We’ve backed a number of projects, but this is the one that’s broken away from the pack,” he said.
