If you’re trying to make the most of the various opportunities offered by decentralized finance, it’s likely that you’ll have to use more than one blockchain. In order to transfer tokens from one blockchain platform to another, you’ll need to use a bridge.

In this article, we’ll showcase the best crypto bridges available at the moment. When selecting the best cross-chain bridges for crypto transfers, we considered liquidity, the number of supported blockchains, the quality of the interface, and other factors.

The best crypto bridges for cross-chain swaps:

  1. Across Protocol – High speed, low fee bridge bridge powered by intents
  2. Synapse Protocol – The best crypto bridge platform overall
  3. Portal Token Bridge – A bridge for both EVM and non-EVM blockchains
  4. Allbridge – Solid bridging solution for EVM and non-EVM chain, in particular Solana
  5. Stargate – Token bridge with a diverse range of supported platforms
  6. Arbitrum Bridge – The go-to bridge for transfers between Ethereum and Arbitrum
  7. Celer cBridge – Celer’s token bridging solution
  8. Hop Protocol – Bridge specialized for Ethereum layer 2s
  9. Connext – A bridge for EVM blockchains and layer 2s

The 9 best crypto bridges: Examining top choices for transferring tokens between blockchains

It’s important to mention that blockchain bridges have, unfortunately, been a very popular target for exploits. In fact, some of the biggest hacks and exploits that we have seen to date have targeted bridges. Bridging tokens between blockchains is still a relatively new concept, and many implementations have been exposed for having critical vulnerabilities that the developers didn’t catch before deploying their bridging solutions.

So, when bridging tokens between blockchains, we recommend exercising some caution and never committing more than you can afford to lose. Given the history of blockchain bridge hacks, it’s probably smarter to err on the side of caution even when using a popular and reputable bridging solution.

1. Across Protocol – High speed, low fee bridge bridge powered by intents

Launched in 2021, Across Protocol is an interoperability solution powered by intents. Intents-based frameworks are proving to be an ever more popular solution in the bridging space and Across leads the routes it supports, frequently able to provide the cheapest and fastest bridge option.

Across is unique because it only transfers canonical or genuine assets, instead of wrapped, synthetic tokens. For this reason, Across is only deployed on chains that have an official bridge that helps carry out its canonical token transfers under the hood.

Since Across is built on an intents-based framework, it is able to transfer the majority of bridge requests in a matter of seconds and at extremely competitive rates. Cross-chain bridge transfers are executed by third party relayers or fillers, who use their own capital on the destination chain to quickly send tokens to bridge users on their desired chain. These fillers compete to execute bridge transfer requests, and this competition drives down fees and speeds up transactions.

The Across bridge service has a lengthy security record, largely thanks to being powered by UMA’s Optimistic Oracle. Additionally, the relayers shoulder any risks associated with bridging, whereas many other bridge designs assign these risks to bridge LPs or end users. Across’ intents-based framework offers robust cross-chain execution without security trade-offs. As the multichain economy becomes more complex, the key to solving interoperability is proving to be intents.

Key features:

  • Near-instantaneous transfers
  • Near-zero bridge fees (gas optimized)
  • Only sends users canonical (genuine) assets (no minted representative tokens)
  • Many routes offer bridge fee reimbursements (e.g., earn 95% of bridge fees back in ARB rebates when bridging to Arbitrum)
  • High APYs due to innovative Reward Locking Program (2x multiplier after 100 days)

2. Synapse Protocol – The best crypto bridge platform overall

Synapse Protocol is a network that enables communication between different blockchains. The network allows any kind of data to be sent across supported blockchains, which allows it to be used for sending NFTs, smart contract calls, and other data in addition to tokens.

The Synapse Protocol is the backbone of the Synapse Bridge, which is one of the most popular blockchain bridges on the market today. One of the reasons for its popularity is that Synapse Bridge supports a wide variety of blockchains, including EVM and non-EVM chains. You can use Synapse to transfer tokens to layer 2s, such as Optimism and Arbitrum, as well as layer 1 blockchains, like Fantom and BNB Chain.

You can connect to Synapse Bridge using MetaMask, Rainbow, Coinbase Wallet, WalletConnect, or Rabby Wallet.

According to decentralized finance tracker DeFi Llama, Synapse Protocol has a TVL (total value locked) of about $116 million at the time of writing.

Key features:

  • Employs a unique bridging mechanism that aggregates liquidity from multiple sources, ensuring high liquidity and minimizing slippage
  • Leverages a combination of Layer-2 scaling solutions and optimized smart contracts to handle cross-chain transactions efficiently
  • Supports cross-chain staking and yield farming opportunities
  • Integrated decentralized exchange (DEX) and a launchpad platform
  • A native token called SYN, which serves as the governance token and facilitates staking rewards

3. Portal Token Bridge – A bridge for both EVM and non-EVM blockchains

The Portal Token Bridge is a cross-chain bridge for crypto that’s based on the Wormhole protocol. When using this bridge, the tokens you are sending are locked using a smart contract, and an equivalent amount of wrapped tokens is created on the destination chain.

One of the Portal Token Bridge’s strongest features is its selection of supported blockchains, which is among the largest among all cross-chain bridges. The bridge supports blockchains that you might not be able to find on many other multi-chain bridges, including Sui, Sei, Near, and Aptos. Of course, the Portal Token Bridge also supports more common networks such as Ethereum, BNB Chain, Solana, and Polygon.

It’s worth mentioning that Portal also offers an NFT bridge, which supports transfers of NFTs based on the ERC-721 and SPL standards. Overall, the Portal Token Bridge is a great choice if you’re active on many different blockchains and would like to keep all your bridging under one roof.

Key features:

  • Cross-chain bridge for crypto that’s based on the Wormhole protocol
  • Supports smaller blockchain ecosystems, including Sui, Sei, Near, and Aptos, in addition to more common networks such as Ethereum, BNB Chain, Solana, and Polygon
  • Includes an NFT bridge that supports transfers of NFTs based on the ERC-721 and SPL standards
  • Supports cross-chain staking and yield farming opportunities

4. Allbridge – Solid bridging solution for EVM and non-EVM chain, in particular, Solana

Allbridge is a blockchain bridging platform that offers two main solutions — Allbridge Core and Allbridge Classic.

The Allbridge Core product focuses on stablecoins, allowing users to transfer stablecoins between EVM and non-EVM blockchain platforms. This is a valuable tool since many blockchain bridges are only limited to EVM-compatible blockchains. For example, one could use Allbridge Core to swap their USDT tokens on the Ethereum blockchain for USDC tokens on the Solana blockchain.

At the time of writing, Allbridge Core features 13 liquidity pools, with about $41.4 million worth of stablecoins locked. So, while the liquidity is not tremendous, it should certainly suffice for the average cryptocurrency user who’s making low to medium sized swaps.

Meanwhile, Allbridge Classic is an all-purpose bridging tool that supports 24 different blockchain platforms in total and can be used to transfer a wide variety of tokens.

Key features:

  • Supports both EVM (Ethereum, Polygon, etc.) and non-EVM blockchains (Solana, Terra, etc.)
  • Offers two bridging solutions: Allbridge Core and Allbridge Classic
  • Audited by Hacken, Kudelski Security, and Cossack Labs
  • Supports bridging between 24 different blockchains overall

5. Stargate – Token bridge with a diverse range of supported platforms

The Stargate token bridge supports a variety of EVM-compatible blockchains, including layer 1 and layer 2 platforms. It provides a sleek user interface and also provides estimates for slippage and gas costs so you’ll be able to tell how many tokens you’ll keep once the bridging is completed. You can also set your slippage tolerance before making a transaction in order to avoid losing too much value.

On Stargate, you can also stake assets to provide liquidity and earn the protocol’s STG tokens in return. Additionally, STG tokens can be staked to obtain veSTG, which grants holders the right to participate in the protocol’s governance process.

The Stargate protocol has a TVL of $475 million, which makes it one of the biggest bridging solutions in the DeFi sector.

Key features:

  • Supports a number of EVM-compatible blockchains, including layer 1 and layer 2 platforms
  • Boasts a streamlined and easy-to-use UI
  • Provides estimates for slippage and gas costs before each transfer
  • You can earn STG tokens by providing liquidity
  • One of the leading bridge platforms in terms of TVL

6. Arbitrum Bridge – The go-to bridge for transfers between Ethereum and Arbitrum

Arbitrum is currently by far the most popular layer 2 for Ethereum, according to layer 2 data aggregator L2Beat. It boasts a TVL of $16.2 billion, which is over two times higher than the second-ranked Base ($6.6 billion).

Bridging crypto assets between the Ethereum mainnet and Arbitrum is becoming an increasingly common task for anyone who’s active in DeFi. For bridging between these two networks, we recommend the Arbitrum Bridge.

If you want to learn more about using this bridge, we recommend you check out our in-depth Arbitrum Bridge guide, which explains the process step-by-step. The bridge supports 6 different types of Ethereum wallets, so you’ll likely be able to use it regardless of which wallet you prefer.

However, you need to keep in mind that Arbitrum Bridge only supports the Ethereum mainnet, Arbitrum One, and Arbitrum Nova networks. If you’re looking to bridge to other networks as well, we recommend you explore the other bridges we’ve featured in this article.

When bridging between Ethereum and Arbitrum, it’s important to understand that going from Ethereum to Arbitrum is very fast, but withdrawing funds from Arbitrum back to Ethereum takes about 7 days.

Key features:

  • Offers significantly reduced transaction fees compared to Ethereum’s mainnet
  • Utilizes a rollup mechanism, which packages multiple transactions together and submits them to Ethereum as a single transaction
  • All transactions on Arbitrum are secured by Ethereum’s robust consensus mechanism
  • Integrates seamlessly with Ethereum’s ecosystem, allowing users to easily connect their MetaMask wallets and interact with dApps on both chains
  • Designed to be developer-friendly

7. Celer cBridge – Celer Network’s token bridging solution

The Celer cBridge is a cross-chain crypto bridge developed by the team behind Celer Network. The bridge is powered by the Celer Network blockchain interoperability protocol, which allows developers to create inter-chain decentralized applications.

More specifically, the Celer cBridge uses the Celer State Guardian Network (SGN), which is a Proof-of-Stake blockchain that monitors layer 1 transactions that have implications for layer 2 platforms, and passes information from layer 2 to layer 1 when necessary.

A very impressive aspect of the Celer cBridge is the sheer amount of blockchains it supports, as it can be used to bridge crypto assets between 40 different blockchain networks, ranging from the largest platforms, such as Ethereum and Arbitrum, to more niche networks, such as Canto, Shiden, and Aurora.

Key features:

  • Powered by the Celer Network blockchain
  • Uses the Celer State Guardian Network, which is a Proof-of-Stake blockchain that monitors layer 1 transactions
  • It can be used to bridge crypto assets between 40 different blockchain networks
  • Supports bridging of NFTs

8. Hop Protocol – Bridge specialized for Ethereum layer 2s

Hop Protocol is a solution that specializes in transferring tokens across various Ethereum layer 2s. The protocol is engineered in such a way that moving tokens between supported layer 2s is almost instantaneous.

Currently, Hop Protocol supports the Polygon, Gnosis, Optimism, Arbitrum One, Arbitrum Nova, Base, Linea, and Polygon zkEVM scaling solutions for Ethereum, and it’s arguably the best cross-chain bridge for crypto transfers between Ethereum layer 2s.

Hop operates on a fully non-custodial basis, ensuring that neither the funds of liquidity providers within the Automated Market Maker (AMM) nor the funds of users utilizing the Hop Bridge are ever held in custody by a single entity. The Hop Protocol has been audited by Solidified and Monoceros Alpha.

Key features:

  • Focused on Ethereum layer 2 solutions
  • Transferring tokens is near-instantaneous
  • Supports the Polygon, Gnosis, Optimism, Arbitrum One, Arbitrum Nova, Base, Linea, and Polygon zkEVM scaling solutions for Ethereum
  • Operates on a fully non-custodial basis

9. Connext – A bridge for EVM blockchains and layer 2s

Connext offers a cross-chain transfer bridge which is based on the project’s xCall technology. Connext supports various EVM-based layer 1 blockchains, as well as layer 2s such as Optimism and Arbitrum. The Connext bridge can be used to transfer a variety of ERC-20 tokens, as well as the USDC, USDT, and Dai stablecoins.

Users can choose between different tokens to pay gas costs on the destination chain, and there is also a slippage tolerance setting that allows users to define the maximum amount of slippage they are willing to accept. However, Connext’s liquidity is currently quite low. This means users who are looking to bridge larger amounts should probably look elsewhere.

Notably, the Connext platform introduces the xERC20 token standard, which is a cross-chain version of the popular ERC20 standard. The xERC20 standard allows token issuers to launch tokens without limiting themselves to a single ecosystem.

Key features:

  • Supports a variety of EVM-compatible blockchains
  • Provides additional options for developers who want to build decentralized applications across multiple chains
