The open-source payment protocol x402 has been integrated with Etherlink, an EVM-compatible interface for the Tezos ecosystem. The solution was originally developed by Coinbase, a US-based cryptocurrency exchange and blockchain infrastructure company. The Etherlink implementation, called Tez402, was led by TZ APAC, an Asia-Pacific organization supporting Tezos ecosystem growth.
The integration allows developers to turn any Etherlink API into a paid endpoint that charges for each request. Payments are made on-chain using stablecoins, without subscriptions, invoices, or third-party payment processors.
The x402 protocol is designed for fast, low-cost payments for digital services. It is aimed at situations where traditional payment systems are slow or expensive. The protocol revives the HTTP 402 “Payment Required” status code, allowing servers to request crypto payments directly through standard HTTP headers.
For the Etherlink release, TZ APAC adapted the original Coinbase implementation and added additional infrastructure. This includes a facilitator and a Permit2 proxy that allow payments with ERC-20 tokens while keeping transactions non-custodial and locked to a specific destination.
Developers can use the integration to monetize APIs, SaaS services, and Web3 applications running on Etherlink. The x402 integration is now live on the Etherlink mainnet, and developers can begin implementing the payment method using the available quick start guide or by connecting their own facilitator infrastructure.
