Worldcoin, the digital biometric identification project, has rejected the claims made by Buenos Aires regarding possible infringements of customer protection laws. The organization told local sources that it answered Buenos Aires’ requirements since January to show the transparency it exercises in its operations. Worldcoin might face a deeper investigation if a local proposal gets approved.
Worldcoin Denies Wrongdoing in Buenos Aires, Might Face Local Probe
Worldcoin is fighting back against the accusations of alleged wrongdoing Buenos Aires presented this week. The province affirms that Worldcoin violates customer protection regulations by forcing users to approve “abusive” contract clauses. These clauses called out by province officials include determinations that force citizens to solve eventual disputes in international jurisdictions, violating the rights of consumers.
In addition, officials also found contradictions linked to the treatment of users’ biometric data and the inclusion of minors in Worldcoin’s iris scanning operations.
Local sources reported that Worldcoin rejected these allegations, explaining that the project prioritizes “the opportunity to interact with government agencies, regulators and third parties to answer any questions they may have.” In addition, Worldcoin stated that it answered all the inquiries made by the province authorities since January and that the allegations against it still have to be substantiated.
The organization might face a probe in the province, as local deputy Romina Braga proposed scrutinizing Worldcoin’s practices. Concerns about the destiny of the collected biometric data and the lack of regulations on these collection operations fuel the initiative.
Braga made specific remarks about the level of involvement of young people in the project, seeking to collect the bonuses offered by the registration. She stated:
No one knows why they seek biometric data, but many people give it up for the reward. This is repeated in almost all cities and with a large presence of young people interested in participating.
Worldcoin also faces a probe from the Argentine national data comptroller organization since 2023 due to its noncompliance with the Personal Data Protection Act.
