Polkadot was called an “Ethereum killer” because it was built by Ethereum’s former chief technology officer to solve the scaling problems Ethereum hadn’t fixed yet, using a design of connected, independent blockchains instead of one congested chain.

Who Built Polkadot And Why?
Gavin Wood co-founded Ethereum and wrote its Yellow Paper, the technical document defining how the network runs. He also invented Solidity, the programming language most Ethereum smart contracts still use. After leaving the Ethereum Foundation in 2016, Wood founded Parity Technologies and the Web3 Foundation, and used them to build Polkadot.
Wood’s reasoning was as follows: Ethereum planned to fix its scaling limits through sharding, splitting the network into smaller pieces that process transactions in parallel. When that plan stalled, Wood built his own version instead, pushing the sharding idea further with independent chains, called parachains, that connect through a central relay chain and share one security layer.
What Made Polkadot’s Design Different?
Polkadot’s architecture rests on three parts.

What Actually Changed?
Two things shifted the comparison between Polkadot and Ethereum.
First, Ethereum chose a different scaling path. Instead of native sharding, Ethereum leaned into Layer 2 rollups, networks like Arbitrum, Optimism, and Base that process transactions off the main chain and post proofs back to it. This became Ethereum’s dominant scaling strategy and is now standard infrastructure across the ecosystem.Second, Polkadot hit its own operational strain. In 2023, Parity Technologies cut roughly a third of its 385-person staff as funding tightened. Gavin Wood has argued that Polkadot’s design still reflects Ethereum’s original long-term vision more closely than rollups do, since parachains avoid the bridging friction that comes with moving funds between separate Layer 2 networks.
How Is Polkadot Responding Now?
Polkadot replaced its parachain auction system with Agile Coretime, a pay-as-you-go market for blockspace that lets projects buy computing time in smaller chunks instead of multi-year leases. This was launched as part of the “Polkadot 2.0” upgrade alongside elastic scaling, which lets a single parachain produce multiple blocks per relay chain block for higher throughput.
The bigger change ahead is JAM (Join-Accumulate Machine), approved by a near-unanimous $DOT holder vote in May 2024. JAM aims to replace the relay chain with a more modular, minimalist design, letting anyone build a service on Polkadot without bidding for a dedicated parachain slot. The Web3 Foundation backed JAM’s development with a prize pool of 10,000,000 $DOT and 100,000 KSM.
Polkadot has also proposed economic reforms in recent weeks: a hard supply cap near 2.1 billion $DOT, a halving of token inflation, and a shorter staking unbonding period targeting 24 to 48 hours instead of the current multi-week wait. The goal is to reduce ongoing sell pressure from unlocked tokens.
