The Machines That Rule Bitcoin Mining

With bitcoin prices trending higher compared to the previous month, miners are basking in the glow of increased earnings from block rewards. As 2025 draws nearer, it’s worth exploring the leading application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC) bitcoin miners available today and anticipating the new releases slated for next year.

Hashing Powerhouses

Bitcoin mining has undergone a fascinating evolution since Satoshi Nakamoto launched the network nearly 16 years ago. Back then, miners relied on home computers powered by central processing units (CPUs) to secure blocks. By the time Satoshi stepped away in 2010, the game had shifted to graphics processing units (GPUs), and since 2013, specialized application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC) machines designed specifically for the SHA256 algorithm have taken center stage.

ASIC technology has come a long way, with advancements in semiconductors and innovations like hydro-cooled and immersion-cooled systems. These cutting-edge machines now generate unprecedented hashpower. This review of the top five miners available today considers two key factors: electricity costs at $0.07 per kilowatt hour (kWh) and the current hashprice—the estimated value of 1 petahash per second—currently sitting at $62.54 per PH/s.

Bitmain’s Antminer S21 XP Hydro

The Antminer S21 XP Hydro cranks out an impressive 473 terahash per second (TH/s) of hashpower while drawing about 5,676 watts (W) of electricity. With an energy efficiency of 12 joules per terahash (J/T), this hydro-cooled beast, released in Oct. 2024, brings in an estimated $26.75 daily profit at an electricity rate of $0.07 per kilowatt hour (kWh).

Bitmain’s Antminer S21e XP Hydro

The Antminer S21e XP is a slightly scaled-down version of its counterpart. It generates 430 TH/s, consumes about 5,590 W, and offers an energy efficiency of 13 J/T. Under the same electricity rate, the S21e XP is estimated to earn $23.59 daily, making it a solid choice for miners with a tighter budget.

Microbt’s Whatsminer M63S

The Whatsminer M63S delivers 390 TH/s of hashpower, translating to about $17.79 per day in profit under the $0.07 per kWh assumption. Drawing 7,215 W of power, the M63S achieves an energy efficiency of 18.5 J/T. This unit has been available since Oct. 2023 and continues to be a strong performer.

Auradine’s Teraflux AI3680 – Immersion Single-Phase

Auradine’s immersion miner, the Teraflux AI3680, clocks in at 365 TH/s. At this output, miners can expect around $17.02 daily profits using the same electricity rate. While its exact power consumption isn’t listed, the manufacturer claims an energy efficiency of 15 J/T, making it a competitive option for immersion cooling setups.

Bitmain’s Antminer S21 Hydro

The original Antminer S21 Hydro, launched in Jan. 2024, rounds out the top five most profitable machines with a hashpower of 335 TH/s. Drawing 5,360 W and boasting an efficiency of 16 J/T, it generates an estimated $16.69 daily profit using $0.07 per kWh and a hashprice of $62.54 per PH/s.

Next Year’s Cutting-Edge Mining Units Are Almost Here

These ASIC machines range in price from $4,439 to $11,200, so calculating return on investment (ROI) is crucial. Looking ahead, 2025 is set to bring a new wave of machines from manufacturers like Bitmain, Bitdeer, and Canaan. Bitmain’s Antminer S21e XP Hydro 3U, expected to launch next month, promises a hashpower of 860 TH/s. If it were operational today under the same electricity rate and hashprice, this machine would generate an estimated $47.18 in daily profits.

The evolution of mining technology reflects the relentless drive for efficiency and profitability in bitcoin mining. Each new generation of machines inches closer to maximizing power output while minimizing energy waste, pushing the limits of what’s possible. As competition heats up, only those who adapt and innovate will thrive in this rapidly advancing space.
