Slow And Steady
Onchain $SUI trackers revealed recently that the network’s total stablecoin supply had “reached $500 million again,” with Defillama corroborating the same and even suggesting that Sui’s circulating stablecoin supply had been hovering close to that mark for many months running.
Last year in May, Sui’s stablecoin balances peaked at $1.6 billion before falling to roughly $492 million by the end of H1 2026 (a drop of about 69%). The metric has seemingly stayed steady since.
The supply plateau stands in contrast to what’s happening on the transaction side of things. In May, Mysten Labs, the core development company behind Sui, rolled out a protocol-level change that dropped stablecoin transfer fees to zero and removed the requirement to hold native $SUI tokens just to move funds. The feature covers seven stablecoins, including $USDC, USDsui, SuiUSDe, AUSD, FDUSD, USDB, and USDY.
The zero-fee model has since driven heavy usage as Sui processed over $65 billion in fee-free stablecoin transfers since June 10, all while the network’s cumulative stablecoin transaction volume has topped $2.27 trillion since early 2024 (16 billion transactions in all).
Security firm CertiK, which tracked the $65 billion figure, did not disclose a breakdown of which stablecoins or counterparties made up the volume. Mysten Labs co-founder Adeniyi Abiodun has argued the change removes “unnecessary complexity” from stablecoin infrastructure and could position Sui as an alternative to legacy payment rails.
Other corners of the Sui ecosystem have shown more visible growth this month, with Bitcoin.com News reporting earlier this month that Sui’s Hashi bridge testnet, live since July 22, had processed more than 1.1 million deposit transactions and over 165,000 withdrawals in three weeks.
Throughput up, Supply Flat
The split between rising transfer volume and flat stored value is not unusual for a payments-focused chain. Zero-fee rails encourage stablecoins to move quickly between wallets and applications rather than sit parked on the network, so high settlement volume does not automatically translate into a larger resident supply.
In any case, if Sui’s stablecoin supply breaks meaningfully above $500 million will likely hinge on new issuance or fresh institutional deployments rather than transfer activity alone. $USDC remains the dominant stablecoin on the network, and any expansion from Circle or other issuers, or a new native offering, would be the more direct catalyst to watch than transfer-fee mechanics that are already in place.
