The results build on Quantinuum’s September breakthrough, which used a different error-correction method on the same Helios hardware.
“We’ve crossed the threshold necessary for exponential improvements in accuracy, reinforcing our path to Apollo and how we can help users unlock commercial value from quantum at scale,” said Quantinuum CEO Rajeeb Hazra, in a statement.
The company said its latest achievement brings error-correction performance into the target range for Apollo, its planned universal fault-tolerant quantum computer expected by 2029.
Robin Blume-Kohout, co-director of Sandia National Laboratories’ Quantum Performance Lab, who was not involved in the research, called the achievement a significant milestone. He said the findings suggest a scaled-up system could achieve useful fault-tolerant computing with fewer than one million physical qubits.
The results nevertheless concern a specific error-correction benchmark rather than a demonstration of a large-scale, general-purpose quantum computer. Significant engineering challenges remain before such systems can execute complex algorithms reliably.
Bitcoin’s Quantum Threat Comes Into Focus
The announcement follows a separate breakthrough announced by Google Quantum AI last week, as researchers demonstrated a technique called “magic state cultivation” that reduced errors by a factor of 40. The research achieved 99.99% logical fidelity in producing specialized quantum states needed for certain advanced computations.
As Bitcoin.com News reported, Google’s progress has renewed concerns about “Q-Day,” the hypothetical point at which quantum computers become powerful enough to break widely used cryptographic systems.
Earlier this year, Google researchers estimated that breaking the elliptic-curve cryptography used in Bitcoin’s digital signatures could require fewer than 500,000 physical qubits, roughly 20 times fewer than some previous estimates.
The research also outlined a theoretical scenario in which an advanced quantum computer could derive a bitcoin private key from an exposed public key in approximately nine minutes.
Researchers estimated that about 6.9 million BTC—nearly one-third of the total possible supply of bitcoin—could be potentially vulnerable because their public keys have already been exposed, including funds held in older wallet formats and reused addresses.
Although Quantinuum’s latest breakthrough does not demonstrate any capability to crack Bitcoin’s cryptography, it represents progress toward the reliable quantum computation that could eventually make such attacks feasible.
The developments have intensified discussions about preparing cryptocurrency networks for a post-quantum world. Fidelity Digital Assets has warned that exposed Bitcoin public keys could become vulnerable, while Coinbase has highlighted the technical challenges of transitioning the Bitcoin network to quantum-resistant cryptography.
Potential defenses include new digital signature schemes, but implementing them could require substantial changes to Bitcoin’s infrastructure, including larger signatures, wallet upgrades, and coordination across the decentralized network.
A particularly difficult issue involves dormant bitcoin holdings whose owners may be unable to migrate their funds to quantum-resistant addresses.
For now, no existing quantum computer is capable of breaking Bitcoin’s cryptographic protections. But with Quantinuum targeting 2029 for its fault-tolerant Apollo system and Google making rapid progress on related technologies, the race to develop quantum-resistant cryptocurrency infrastructure is taking on greater urgency.
