Is It the Best Crypto Exchange for US Traders?

Coinbase is the most regulated, most publicly accountable cryptocurrency exchange in the world. It was the first crypto company to list on a major stock exchange (Nasdaq, April 2021), the first crypto-native company to join the S&P 500 (May 2025), holds $516 billion in customer assets, and operates under stricter regulatory oversight than any other exchange in its class.

It is also, by most measures, the most expensive major exchange to use — and not always the most feature-rich for experienced traders.

That tension defines Coinbase: maximum trust, maximum accessibility, maximum compliance — at a premium price. Whether that trade-off is worth it depends entirely on who you are and what you need from an exchange.

This review covers everything — features, fees, security, the May 2025 cyberattack, the Deribit acquisition, Base Layer-2, supported assets, mobile app, and how Coinbase compares to Binance, Bybit, OKX, Mercado Bitcoin, Paybis and 1inch.

Disclaimer: This review is for informational purposes only and does not constitute financial or investment advice. Cryptocurrency is a high-risk asset class.

Coinbase at a Glance

Source: CoinGecko, Coinbase Q4 2024 shareholder letter, company filings.

What Is Coinbase?

Coinbase was founded in 2012 by Brian Armstrong and Fred Ehrsam — making it one of the oldest operational crypto exchanges in existence. It was built from day one around a single thesis: make it as easy as possible for ordinary people to buy Bitcoin with a bank account. Thirteen years later, that founding philosophy still defines the platform.

Where Binance was built for traders, Coinbase was built for buyers. The simple buy/sell interface requires no knowledge of order books, trading pairs, or fee structures. You enter a dollar amount, choose an asset, and confirm. For the 100+ million people who own crypto but don’t actively trade it, that simplicity is genuinely valuable.

Over the years, Coinbase has expanded well beyond its origins. It now offers Advanced Trade for professional traders, perpetual futures with up to 20x leverage for international users, an institutional prime brokerage (Coinbase Prime), a Layer-2 network (Base), a self-custody wallet, a native stablecoin ($USDC, co-developed with Circle), and — following its 2025 acquisition of Deribit — one of the world’s largest crypto options exchanges.

The company went public on Nasdaq in April 2021, reached a peak market cap of over $65 billion in 2021, fell to under $8 billion during the 2022 bear market, and recovered to approximately $68–$81 billion by early 2026.

Coinbase Features

Simple Buy / Sell

Coinbase’s flagship interface for retail users. Choose a cryptocurrency, enter a fiat amount, select a payment method (bank transfer, debit card, PayPal, Apple Pay), and confirm. The full cost is shown before you commit. Recurring buy schedules allow dollar-cost averaging in a few taps. No trading knowledge required.

The trade-off: simple buy uses a spread built into the quoted price plus an explicit flat or percentage fee — making it significantly more expensive than Advanced Trade for the same transaction.

Advanced Trade

Coinbase Advanced Trade is the professional trading interface — the direct successor to Coinbase Pro. It features a full TradingView-powered charting suite, live order book, depth chart, and complete order types: market, limit, stop-limit, and bracket orders. Fees follow a maker-taker model with nine volume tiers, starting at 0.40% / 0.60% and reaching 0.00% / 0.05% at the highest tier. For active traders, Advanced Trade is dramatically cheaper than the simple buy interface and should be the default for anyone trading more than occasionally.

Futures & Perpetuals

Following years of regulatory limitations, Coinbase now offers perpetual futures with up to 20x leverage for eligible international users. Coinbase increased leverage to 20x for perpetual futures in 2025, narrowing the gap with Binance (125x) and Bybit (100x). US users have access to CFTC-regulated nano Bitcoin and Ether futures through Coinbase Financial Markets.

Deribit Acquisition — Options Trading

In one of crypto’s largest-ever M&A deals, Coinbase acquired Deribit in 2025 for approximately $2.9 billion in cash and stock. Deribit is the world’s largest crypto options exchange, handling the majority of global $BTC and $ETH options volume. The acquisition transforms Coinbase into a full-spectrum derivatives venue — spot, futures, perpetuals, and options — and is covered in detail in our Top Crypto News of 2025 roundup.

Coinbase One

Coinbase’s $29.99/month subscription removes trading fees up to a set monthly volume limit, provides priority customer support, up to $1 million in identity theft coverage, and access to exclusive earn opportunities. Over 600,000 users had subscribed as of Q4 2024. For users who trade regularly via Simple Buy, Coinbase One typically pays for itself quickly — breaking even requires saving more than $29.99 in fees, achievable with $2,500–$5,000 in monthly trading at standard rates.

Staking & Earn

Coinbase offers staking for $ETH, $SOL, $ADA, ATOM, DOT, and other proof-of-stake assets. Coinbase controls approximately 3.84 million $ETH — representing 11.42% of all staked Ether, according to Rated Network staking data — making it the largest single Ethereum staking provider in the world. Coinbase Earn offers small crypto rewards for completing educational content.

Base — Layer 2 Network

Base is Coinbase’s Ethereum Layer-2 network, launched in August 2023 on the OP Stack. Coinbase Smart Wallets crossed 1 million users as Base adoption accelerated, driven by the rollout of the Coinbase app’s native Base integration. Base has grown into one of the most active L2 networks by transaction count and developer activity, hosting DeFi protocols, $NFT platforms, and AI agent applications.

Coinbase Wallet

Coinbase’s self-custody wallet supports 100,000+ assets across multiple blockchains and connects to DeFi protocols, $NFT marketplaces, and dApps directly from mobile. Unlike funds held on the exchange, assets in Coinbase Wallet are fully user-controlled. For users who want self-custody combined with the Coinbase brand’s familiarity, it’s one of the most accessible non-custodial options available. See our 10 best Bitcoin and crypto wallets guide for a full comparison.

Coinbase Prime — Institutional Services

Coinbase Prime manages custody for several Bitcoin ETF products — including those from BlackRock and Fidelity — making Coinbase the dominant custodian for institutional crypto assets in the US. Prime supports 250+ digital assets for trading and custody of 440+ assets across 38 blockchain networks.

$USDC

Coinbase co-developed USD Coin ($USDC) with Circle and remains one of its primary distributors. $USDC is the most regulated major stablecoin in the world — fully reserved, monthly attested, and operating under US money transmission frameworks. Free conversion between USD and $USDC with no fees makes Coinbase the most cost-effective on-ramp for stablecoin users.

Coinbase Fees — Full Breakdown

Coinbase’s fee structure is its most criticized aspect. The critical distinction is between Simple Buy and Advanced Trade.

Simple Buy / Sell Fees

The total effective cost for a simple buy over $200 can reach 2–3% all-in — 20–30x higher than Advanced Trade for the same asset.

Advanced Trade Fees

Even at base Advanced Trade rates (0.40%/0.60%), Coinbase is more expensive than Binance (0.10%/0.10%) at equivalent volumes. The gap narrows at higher tiers but Coinbase never reaches Binance’s sub-0.02% VIP rates.

Deposit & Withdrawal Fees

  • Crypto deposits: Free (network fees apply)
  • $ACH bank transfer (US): Free
  • Wire transfer (US): $10 incoming / $25 outgoing
  • Debit card / PayPal: ~2.49%
  • $USDC conversions: Free
  • Crypto withdrawals: Variable network fee shown before confirmation

Coinbase Security

Regulatory Standing

Coinbase holds money transmission licenses in 49 US states, is registered with FinCEN, operates under New York’s BitLicense, and files quarterly financial statements with the SEC as a public company — the only crypto exchange subject to this level of public disclosure. No other major crypto exchange offers this level of financial transparency.

Coinbase has faced regulatory penalties: Ireland fined it €21.5 million for AML deficiencies, and the NYDFS imposed a $100 million settlement for compliance failures. These reflect the cost of operating under real regulatory oversight — something most offshore exchanges avoid entirely.

May 2025 Cyberattack

In May 2025, social engineering attacks compromised customer support contractors, exposing personal data of approximately 69,461 users. No passwords, private keys, or funds were accessed. Coinbase refused to pay a $20 million ransom and posted a $20 million bounty for information leading to the attackers’ arrest. Remediation costs are estimated at $180–$400 million. Coinbase published a full account of the incident and its response in its official security disclosure. The incident occurred during what became the costliest year for crypto hacks in history, though unlike exchange hacks, no Coinbase user funds were stolen.

Cold Storage & Asset Protection

Approximately 98% of customer assets are held in offline cold storage — one of the highest ratios in the industry. Customer crypto assets are held separately from company assets under US bankruptcy law. Coinbase publishes audited financials and a real-time Proof of Reserves portal where users can verify their own balances are included in the reserve audit.

Security Features for Users

  • 2FA: Authenticator app, hardware security key (FIDO2/WebAuthn), SMS
  • Biometric login: Face ID and fingerprint on mobile
  • Vault accounts: Time-delayed withdrawals (24–48 hours) for large holdings
  • Withdrawal allowlist: Restrict withdrawals to pre-approved addresses only
  • Device authorization: New device logins require email confirmation
  • Coinbase One protection: Up to $1 million identity theft coverage for subscribers

Supported Cryptocurrencies & Assets

Coinbase lists 9,266 total assets but trades 313 cryptocurrencies across 502+ pairs — fewer than Binance (600+) or OKX (600+), reflecting stricter listing standards.

Key categories:

  • Blue-chip: $BTC, $ETH, $SOL, XRP, $BNB, $ADA, AVAX, $DOGE
  • DeFi: UNI, AAVE, CRV, COMP, MKR, LDO
  • Stablecoins: $USDC, USDT, DAI, EURC
  • L2 / Infrastructure: ARB, OP, Base ecosystem tokens
  • Meme coins: $DOGE, SHIB, PEPE (limited selection vs. competitors)

Notably absent: many newly launched tokens immediately available on Binance or OKX. Coinbase’s legal review process means new listings can lag behind competitors by weeks or months.

Coinbase Mobile App

Coinbase’s iOS and Android apps consistently rank among the most downloaded finance apps in the US. Features include:

  • Simple buy/sell interface (default home screen)
  • Advanced Trade with full charting and order management
  • Portfolio dashboard with performance tracking
  • Recurring buy scheduling
  • Staking and Earn management
  • Coinbase One subscription management
  • Price alerts and news feed

The UX is polished — clean, fast, and intuitive. Coinbase’s mobile experience is the benchmark for beginner-friendliness in the crypto exchange category.

Pros and Cons of Coinbase

Pros

The safest on-ramp in crypto for US users. Regulated in 49 states, S&P 500 member, audited financials, and 98% cold storage. For users prioritizing trust and regulatory protection above all else, no alternative comes close.

Best-in-class beginner experience. The simple buy interface eliminates every barrier to entry. New users can go from zero to holding Bitcoin in under five minutes. Coinbase Academy provides extensive structured learning content.

Dominant institutional infrastructure. Coinbase Prime and Custody manage assets for BlackRock, Fidelity, and dozens of institutional ETF clients. The gold standard for regulated institutional crypto custody in the US.

Growing ecosystem. Base (active L2), Deribit (options), $USDC (regulated stablecoin), and Coinbase Wallet (self-custody) give the platform a credible full-ecosystem play comparable to Binance’s breadth.

$USDC integration. Free conversion between USD and $USDC with no transfer fees — the most cost-effective on-ramp for stablecoin users.

Cons

Fees are high on Simple Buy. At 2–3% all-in on simple trades, Coinbase charges 20–30x more than Binance for the same transaction. Even Advanced Trade base rates (0.40%/0.60%) are 4-6x higher than Binance’s flat 0.10%.

Limited altcoin selection. With 313 tradable assets vs. 600+ on Binance and OKX, Coinbase misses many emerging tokens. Users seeking broad altcoin exposure need a supplementary exchange or self-custody wallet.

No native exchange token. Unlike Binance ($BNB), OKX (OKB), or Bybit (BIT), Coinbase has no token offering fee reductions. Coinbase One is the only fee-reduction tool, at $29.99/month.

May 2025 data breach. Personal data of 69,461 users exposed via social engineering. No funds stolen, but the incident highlights human-factor vulnerabilities even at the most regulated exchanges.

Derivatives limited for US users. The full perpetuals suite (20x leverage) is available internationally only. US users are restricted to CFTC-regulated nano futures contracts.

Coinbase vs. Competitors

Coinbase & COIN Stock

Unlike every other exchange in this section, Coinbase is a publicly traded S&P 500 company. COIN stock trades on Nasdaq and is held in virtually every US index fund as an S&P 500 component. Owning COIN is effectively a leveraged bet on crypto trading volume without directly holding crypto — the stock tends to outperform $BTC in bull markets and underperform in bear markets.

Key milestones: April 2021 Nasdaq listing at $250 reference price; June 2022 all-time low of ~$40; May 2025 S&P 500 inclusion with a 15–24% stock surge; early 2026 trading around $234–$248 with a ~$68 billion market cap.

How to Create a Coinbase Account

  1. Visit coinbase.com or download the app
  2. Click Get Started and enter your email address
  3. Verify email and create a password
  4. Complete KYC: government-issued ID + selfie — required for all transactions
  5. Enable 2FA using an authenticator app (avoid SMS if possible)
  6. Link a payment method: $ACH bank transfer (cheapest), debit card, or PayPal
  7. Navigate to Advanced Trade before your first transaction to avoid Simple Buy fees

Is Coinbase Safe in 2026?

Coinbase is the safest centralized exchange in the world for US users in terms of regulatory standing and financial transparency. SEC-filed financials, S&P 500 membership, full BitLicense, and 49-state money transmission licenses are real oversight with real consequences.

The May 2025 breach is a legitimate concern — social engineering of support staff is a recurring threat vector for all centralized services. Coinbase’s response (posting a $20M bounty, committing hundreds of millions to remediation) was notably proactive. No funds were lost, but personal data was exposed.

Practical steps: enable hardware key 2FA, activate a Vault for large holdings, set a withdrawal allowlist, and don’t keep more on exchange than you actively need.

Verdict: Is Coinbase the Best Crypto Exchange?

For US-based retail users who prioritize security, regulation, and ease of use — yes. No other exchange combines full US compliance, S&P 500-level financial transparency, 98% cold storage, and a beginner interface that genuinely works.

For active traders focused on fees and altcoin selection, Coinbase is costly at default settings. Advanced Trade closes the gap considerably, but Binance, OKX, and Bybit offer more assets at lower base rates and higher leverage for derivatives.

The ideal Coinbase user: a US-based investor who wants a regulated, trustworthy exchange for Bitcoin, Ethereum, and major altcoins — and is willing to pay a modest premium for the highest regulatory standards in the industry. Migrate to Advanced Trade from day one, consider Coinbase One if you trade regularly, and use Coinbase Wallet for long-term self-custody.

Overall rating: 8.5/10 — the gold standard for compliance, trust, and beginner accessibility; a step behind on fees and altcoin breadth for experienced traders.
