How to get SUI Testnet Tokens?

NBTCBy NBTC02/04/2025No Comments6 Mins Read

Testnets are crucial for developers to safely test smart contracts, wallets, and decentralized applications (dApps) without risking real funds. By replicating real blockchain conditions, testnets enable developers to debug and fine-tune their projects in a controlled environment.

To interact with the Sui testnet, you’ll need testnet tokens, which are used to pay for transactions and simulate real-world operations. These tokens have no monetary value and can be easily obtained through faucets – tools that provide free testnet tokens for development purposes.

In this guide, we’ll explain how to get free SUI testnet tokens, allowing you to test smart contracts and interact with dApps.

Key highlights:

  • The Sui testnet provides developers with a secure environment to test smart contracts and dApps without the risk of losing real funds.
  • To use the Sui testnet, you’ll need to set up a Sui wallet, where you can claim testnet tokens directly through the built-in faucet or via Sui’s official Discord channel.
  • SUI testnet tokens are distributed for free through multiple faucet options, ensuring developers have the resources they need to test transactions and applications effectively.

What is the Sui testnet?

Sui is a blockchain testnet designed for developers to safely test smart contracts and dApps in a secure and efficient environment. It leverages an innovative Proof-of-Stake mechanism and prioritizes scalability, allowing for faster transactions and reduced resource requirements compared to older testnets. The Sui testnet provides a streamlined experience for both developers and validators.

In the following steps, we’ll guide you through the process of configuring your Sui wallet to interact with the testnet. Afterwards, we’ll cover both the built-in faucet within the wallet and the Discord-based faucet to help you easily claim free SUI tokens for your development needs.

The process of claiming Sui testnet tokens is very straightforward and requires 5 to 10 minutes. Keep in mind that testnet tokens are designed to test blockchain operations before they are deployed to the mainnet, and they hold no monetary value, as opposed to mainnet SUI cryptocurrency.

Step 1: Install the Sui wallet

If you don’t have Sui Wallet, go to the Google Chrome Web store and download Sui Wallet. Set up your wallet, which includes entering a password and making sure to save your 12-word passphrase. After Sui Wallet is set up, you can open it from the list of extensions in Google Chrome. The address is located at the top of the wallet window (see red arrow in the image below).

Step 2: Switch to the Sui testnet

Next, navigate to the settings menu (in the top-right corner, gear icon). Click on the “Network” menu to open the menu where you can switch to the Sui testnet. In the network menu, select the “Testnet” option.

How to get free Sui on the testnet?

In the following sections, we’ll introduce the best methods to claim free SUI testnet tokens, allowing you to start testing smart contracts and dApps on the Sui blockchain. Before we proceed, ensure you have a Sui wallet set up, as it is essential for interacting with the testnet.

Sui offers two main ways to obtain testnet tokens: the built-in faucet within the wallet and the Discord bot faucet. Unlike some faucets on other testnets, claiming SUI tokens does not require any pre-existing balance, making the process accessible and straightforward for developers.

Built-in faucet in the Sui wallet

We’ve shown you how to configure your Sui wallet to switch to the testnet. After you’ve completed those steps, the wallet offers you a built-in Sui testnet faucet. To claim the testnet tokens, just click on the “Request testnet SUI Tokens” button that appears at the bottom of the settings menu once you’ve switched to the testnet. The testnet tokens should appear in your wallet balance in a few minutes.

Sui faucet Discord bot

The second way to claim free Sui testnet tokens is through the official Sui Discord channel. Upon joining, you’ll need to verify your account via the link that is provided after opening the Sui Discord channel for the first time.

After verifying your account, search for the “testnet-faucet” channel. Keep in mind that the faucet might be overloaded depending on requests or undergoing maintenance. Come back at a later time if that’s the case.

To request test coins, please write a message in the form, “!faucet <your_sui_address>”, and the faucet bot will send SUI to your address within 10 minutes. You can find your wallet address in the Sui Wallet app.

What is the difference between Sui DevNet and testnet?

The main difference between Sui DevNet, Sui Testnet, and Sui Mainnet is the purpose of each network and the level of security and stability they offer.

  • Sui DevNet is a development network that is operated by Mysten Labs. It is used by developers to build and test their applications before deploying them to the mainnet. Sui DevNet is not as secure or stable as the other networks, but it is the best place to start for developers who are new to Sui.
  • Sui Testnet is a public test network that is operated by a community of validators. It is used by developers and users to test the Sui network before it is launched on the mainnet. Sui Testnet is more secure and stable than DevNet, but it is still not recommended for use with real assets.
  • Sui Mainnet is the main Sui network where all real transactions are processed. It is the most secure and stable of the three networks, but it is also the most important. Developers should only deploy their applications to the mainnet once they have been thoroughly tested on DevNet and Testnet.

The bottom line

Testnet SUI tokens allow users and developers to test blockchain applications and operations, like paying gas fees, without risking real money. Testnet tokens hold no monetary value and thus cannot be exchanged for fiat or other cryptocurrencies.

It is worth noting that several other cryptocurrencies also use testnet faucets. Check the following guides for more information:
