Hong Kong-based financial enterprise Venture Smart Financial Holdings Limited (VSFG) is gearing up to launch a spot bitcoin exchange-traded fund (ETF) in the first quarter of this year. According to reports from Bloomberg, the company has set an ambitious target of amassing $500 million in assets under management by year-end.
VSFG, despite boasting the distinction of being the first virtual asset manager to secure approval in Hong Kong, has faced a notable delay in applying an ETF to the Securities and Futures Commission (SFC), the city’s financial regulatory authority.
SFC Issues Circulars for Crypto ETFs
In December, the SFC issued two circulars outlining the necessary steps for establishing spot crypto ETFs, signaling its readiness to receive applications for these financial products. In June of 2023, Hong Kong unveiled its crypto licensing system for crypto trading platforms to regain its status as Asia’s cryptocurrency hub. Currently, Hong Kong already lists three crypto futures ETFs: Samsung Bitcoin BTC −1.98% Futures, CSOP Bitcoin Futures, and CSOP Ether Futures.
According to Livio Weng, Chief Operating Officer (COO) of HashKey, a cryptocurrency exchange in Hong Kong, around ten regional fund providers initiated investigations into the feasibility of launching spot crypto ETFs earlier this month.
U.S. Spot Bitcoin ETFs Taking Wall Street By Storm
In the United States, spot bitcoin ETFs have collectively recorded trading volumes exceeding $13 billion since receiving clearance from the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission on January 10th. However, the initial excitement surrounding this approval has waned, causing the bitcoin price to dip to approximately $41K at the time of this report.
Catherine Clay, the global head of derivatives at Cboe Global Markets, has hinted at the future of Bitcoin ETFs, suggesting that options could become an integral part of this burgeoning market. In an exclusive interview with CNBC’s “ETF Edge,” Clay emphasized the potential benefits of options, highlighting their role in offering downside protection and well-defined risk exposure in the volatile world of Bitcoin.
The Cboe, the largest U.S. options exchange, has boldly filed options linked to Bitcoin exchange-traded products with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) on January 5th. The company expressed its anticipation of commencing options trading later this year, marking a significant milestone in the evolution of cryptocurrency investments.
Analysts’ Views On The ETFs
Financial futurist Dave Nadig of VettaFi has drawn attention to a potential shift in the mindset of institutional investors. He believes that introducing alternative investment options within crypto funds could sway institutional decision-makers. Nadig also predicted the entry of various hedge fund players into the crypto sphere, stating, “Now, every participant in the crypto ecosystem, even those unacquainted with crypto speculation, will have a stake.”
Nadig also outlined an intriguing vision for the future of Bitcoin derivatives products, emphasizing the importance of zero-day options, often referred to as “0DTEs.” These contracts have an expiration date matching the trading day and could become a significant trend if Bitcoin’s performance aligns with that of individual equities.
Despite the optimism surrounding Bitcoin ETFs and options, Catherine Clay of Cboe sounded cautious. She stressed the need for patience, as the authorization to offer options is still pending. Clay emphasized their commitment to acquiring options on these ETFs in a strategic and considerate manner, fostering an environment conducive to welcoming new participants into the cryptocurrency market.
