Fixed 21,000-Gas Rule for ETH Transfers to End

The Ethereum Foundation has issued a warning to developers of wallet services, gas-fee calculators, and blockchain explorers ahead of the upcoming Glamsterdam hard fork. The long-standing rule that a simple $ETH transfer always costs 21,000 gas will no longer universally apply, according to a report from CoinDesk.

What Changes with the Glamsterdam Upgrade

Transfers to existing addresses will still require 21,000 gas. However, transfers to new addresses will incur an additional state gas fee of approximately 183,600 gas. This extra cost arises because the network must create and permanently store new state data when an address is first used. The change is part of a broader effort to align transaction fees more closely with the actual computational and storage resources consumed.

Many existing crypto wallets and trading services are designed to hard-code $ETH transfer fees at 21,000 gas or estimate costs along a single gas dimension. After the upgrade, transfers to new addresses could be rejected or fail due to gas-limit overruns or insufficient fees. This could affect users who attempt to send $ETH to a fresh wallet address for the first time, potentially causing transaction delays or failed transfers.

Implications for Users and Developers

For everyday users, the most immediate impact will be on transactions to new addresses. If a wallet does not account for the higher gas requirement, the transaction may fail, leaving the user confused about why their transfer did not go through. Wallet developers and service providers are urged to update their fee estimation algorithms to include the state gas fee for new address transfers.

Gas-fee calculators and blockchain explorers that display estimated fees may also show inaccurate figures unless they are updated. The Ethereum Foundation’s warning highlights the need for the ecosystem to adapt before the hard fork goes live, minimizing disruption for end users.

Why This Matters

This change is significant because the 21,000-gas rule has been a foundational assumption in Ethereum’s design since its launch. It has been used by developers to simplify fee calculations and by users as a reliable benchmark. The Glamsterdam upgrade introduces a more nuanced fee structure that better reflects the true cost of network state changes, but it also requires a coordinated update across the ecosystem.

Bitcoin World previously reported that the Glamsterdam upgrade, initially scheduled for the first half of the year, was delayed to the fourth quarter. The delay provided additional time for testing and preparation, but the recent warning suggests that not all services are yet ready for the change.

Conclusion

The end of the fixed 21,000-gas rule for $ETH transfers marks a notable shift in Ethereum’s fee mechanics. While transfers to existing addresses remain unchanged, new address transfers will cost more, requiring updates to wallets and other tools. Users should ensure their software is up to date before the Glamsterdam hard fork activates to avoid failed transactions. Developers and service providers should act promptly to implement the necessary changes.

FAQs

Q1: Will all $ETH transfers cost more after the Glamsterdam hard fork?
No. Transfers to existing addresses will still require 21,000 gas. Only transfers to new addresses will incur an additional state gas fee of about 183,600 gas, because the network must create and store new state data.

Q2: Why is the additional fee needed?
The additional fee covers the cost of creating and permanently storing new state data on the Ethereum network. This aligns transaction fees more closely with the actual resources consumed, rather than applying a flat rate regardless of network impact.

Q3: What should users do to avoid failed transactions?
Ensure your wallet or service is updated to support the new fee structure. If you are sending $ETH to a new address for the first time, check that your wallet’s gas estimation includes the state gas fee. Keeping software up to date will help prevent transactions from being rejected.
